Student-journalists from different schools across the Municipality of Echague also took part in the activity, accompanied by their respective advisers. Participating schools included Ugad High School, Echague National High School, Pangal Sur High School, St. Dominic Human Development Center Inc., Babaran Integrated School, School of St. Joseph the Worker, and Don Mariano Marcos National High School.

The training covered different areas of campus journalism, including news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, photojournalism, mobile journalism, copy reading and headline writing, sports writing, and radio and television broadcasting.

The said program integrated gender fair reporting as a key learning outcome, which require participants to avoid stereotypes use neutral language and ensure balanced representation in all their outputs. In a guided activity students drafted news stories about the event itself then revised them to remove bias and apply gender fair framing.

As the department leads this fourth chapter of professional development the message remains clear the work is demanding the responsibility is great but the truth is worth pursuing and it must be told fairly and without prejudice.

August 12, 2026 โ€” The School of St. Joseph the Worker, Inc., initiated an Anti-Bullying Symposium in cooperation with PNP-Echague and a feature lecture on drug abuse spearheaded by PDEA to raise awareness and build a safe and inclusive environment.

The Anti-Bullying Symposium was graced by resource speakers PMSg. Raena E. Furuc, along with PEMS Michelle Joy N. Sumanged and PAT Christin Joy D. Bolibol. The speakers highlighted how bullying affects one's life by introducing the four primary forms of bullying: Physical Bullying, which pertains to direct physical harm; Verbal Bullying, which comprises name-calling, insults, and teasing; Social Bullying, which involves spreading rumors, excluding others, and damaging reputations; and Cyber Bullying, which refers to online harassment and digital abuse.

In addition to identifying these behaviors, the discussion emphasized student rights, prevention strategies, and the legal protections under Senate Bill 2667, also known as the Anti-Bullying Act.

PMSg. Furuc reminded the students of the critical reason why bullying must be stopped at all costs, noting, "Ang bullying ay maaaring magdulot ng emosyonal, mental, at pisikal na pinsala. Kaya dapat natin itong itigil.โ€

Meanwhile, the afternoon session featured a lecture on the dangerous effects of illegal drugs led by PDEA Resource Speaker Officer Denis Acosta. The presentation highlighted the critical role of youth education in preventing drug-related offenses and maintaining a safe community.

During the discussion, Officer Acosta revealed an alarming statistic regarding local crime rates, stating that approximately 70% of reported crimes โ€” including robberies, domestic abuse, and road accidents โ€” are directly linked to illegal drug use.

"Education and open discussions in schools play a vital role in keeping youth safe from the spread of illegal drugs," Acosta emphasized, urging students to remain alert and informed.

The symposium also addressed common misunderstandings about pharmaceutical and illegal substances. Officer Acosta clarified that while drugs are technically defined as substances intended to prevent, cure, or treat physical and mental illnesses, abuse occurs when medications are taken without valid medical prescriptions; when household chemicals such as muriatic acid or legitimate medicines are misused; or when illegal substances with no recognized medical purpose are consumed.

Through continued education and awareness, school officials and PDEA personnel encouraged students to make right and responsible decisions, helping them build a safer and drug-free community.

The said symposium was initiated by Prefects of Discipline Victoriano M. Ringor and Warlie D. Capelo, Guidance Coordinators Susan Balmaceda and Mari-Len A. Paynor, under the supervision of Dr. Mariesu M. Antonio, School Principal, and overseen by Mabel P. Dimaandal, Academic Coordinator, and Chen Figuracion, Assistant Principal.

He assured students that no one needs to carry these burdens alone, family, friends, teachers, and above all, God, stand ready to guide and support them.

Valencia discussed four types of intelligence and showed how understanding them helps students respond wisely to conflicts, misunderstandings, and pressure. He addressed common struggles at home such as family tensions, financial concerns, privacy issues, and communication gaps, and emphasized that patience, understanding, and open conversation bridge differences.

He also examined school-related challenges including academic pressure, risk of burnout, time management, and environmental hurdles, and urged kindness, respect, and mutual support inside and outside the classroom. Regarding peer relationships and friendships, he acknowledged emotional struggles, feelings of loneliness, and unhealthy digital habits, and reminded everyone that genuine connection begins with listening, understanding, and knowing when to seek help.

Recent findings highlight the urgency of this message, the AXA Mind Health Report (2026) reveals that 72% of Filipino students experience persistent feelings of sadness and loneliness, while an average of 7.5 hours of daily screen time disrupts sleep and deepens emotional strain. These statistics underscore the critical need to build strong, healthy relationships and safe spaces where students can speak openly about what truly troubles them.

This symposium supports Republic Act No. 11036, the Mental Health Act of 2018, which mandates that mental health services integrate fully into schools and communities to ensure accessible support for all learners. The law requires academic institutions to create environments where students feel safe to seek help without judgment, especially when home difficulties overlap with school pressures.

Moreover, Bucad (2026) claimed that high school students urgently need campus support systems that are visible, accessible, confidential, and non-judgmental. When schools lack these systems, overlapping requirements, peer judgment, and mental burnout directly harm academic performance and erode a studentโ€™s focus and ability to learn. For this reason, structured, school-based mental health programs fulfill an essential requirement for every learnerโ€™s holistic development.

The School of St. Joseph the Worker Inc. upholds its core value of Integrity by affirming that true care begins with honesty, acknowledging that struggles exist, that students share these experiences, and that asking for help is an act of courage and wholeness. By creating a space where students can openly discuss difficulties at home, in class, and among friends, the school honors the whole person: mind, heart, and spirit.

In his closing remarks, Valencia reassured the students that it is okay not to be okay. Struggling, feeling doubtful, and facing uncertainty are all part of being human. What truly matters is how individuals respond, with courage, with support, and with faith. When burdens feel too heavy to carry alone, he urged everyone to bring them to God in prayer, for His love remains constant, His help is sure, and in Him every struggle becomes strength.

The mental health symposium was initiated by Guidance Coordinators Susan Balmaceda and Mari-Len Paynor, alongside Prefects of Discipline Victoriano Ringor and Warlie Capelo. It was organized under the supervision of Dr. Mariesu M. Antonio, School Principal, and under the oversight of Mabel Dimaandal, Academic Coordinator, and Sir Chen Figuracion, Assistant Principal.
