DepEd Region VI Strengthens Home Gardening Program to Promote Food Security and Sustainable Communities
Iloilo City โ The Department of Education Regional Office VI continues to promote the Home Gardening Program as a meaningful initiative that supports food security, proper nutrition, environmental protection, and active family participation among learners and communities across Western Visayas.
More than simply planting vegetables and flowers, the Home Gardening Program serves as a practical strategy for empowering learners, parents, teachers, and other DepEd personnel to work together in producing healthy and nutritious food while developing valuable life skills. The program also fosters responsibility, self-reliance, and sustainabilityโqualities essential for building resilient communities.
DepEd Region VI encourages every household and school community to transform available spaces into productive gardens through container gardening, vertical gardening, backyard gardening, and raised garden beds. Every seed planted contributes to a healthier family, a greener environment, and a more food-secure future.
Beyond food production, home gardening provides opportunities for creativity, improves mental well-being, and may serve as an additional source of livelihood and income for families. By engaging in gardening activities, families strengthen their bonds while cultivating environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
Through collective participation in the Home Gardening Program, learners, parents, teachers, and personnel can help promote environmental stewardship, conserve natural resources, and nurture a culture of resilience and self-reliance within their communities.
Through this initiative, DepEd Region VI reaffirms its commitment to advancing sustainable development, enhancing community well-being, and fostering healthier, greener, and more environmentally conscious communities throughout Western Visayas.
