HSINCHU CITY, TAIWAN โ Silliman University College of Education (SUCoE) strengthened its international engagement in higher education and faculty development through conference leadership and paper presentations during the First Symposium on Faculty Development for Future-Ready Teaching and Learning, held on May 25โ26, 2026, at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in Hsinchu City, Taiwan.
SUCoE Dean Dr. Gina F. Bonior served as invited member of the symposiumโs Steering Committee, contributing to the planning and development of the international event. Dr. Bonior also served as a session chair and co-facilitated a faculty development workshop titled โFrom Mentee to Mentor: Cultivating Excellence in Faculty Mentoringโ together with Dr. Spencer Benson, Director of US-based Educational Innovations International (EII).
Meanwhile, Teacher Education Department Chair Dr. Jasper Eric Catan and COE faculty Dr. Jin H, Genove presented their respective studies through poster presentations, showcasing the College of Educationโs continuing commitment to scholarly inquiry and research dissemination at the international level.
With the theme โHuman-Centered and Open Education: Teaching and Learning in the Digital World,โ the symposium explored the evolving intersection of generative artificial intelligence, digital transformation, open education, faculty mentorship, and future-ready teaching and learning practices. Participants engaged in expert-led workshops, roundtable discussions, and research presentations aimed at strengthening faculty development and enhancing student learning in an increasingly digital and complex educational landscape.
The symposium was co-organized by the Center for Teaching and Learning Development of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) and the Taiwan Open Course and Education Consortium (TOCEC), with support from Education Innovations International (EII), USA.
The Steering Committee was composed of Dr. Yong-Shen Chen, Vice President for Academic Affairs of NYCU; Dr. Haydn Chen, Chief Strategy Officer of NYCU; Dr. Spencer Benson, Director of Educational Innovations International; Dr. Yi-Ju Tseng, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning Development at NYCU; Dr. Kuei-Yuan Chan, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University; Dr. Theresa Kwong, Director of the Centre for Holistic Teaching and Learning at Hong Kong Baptist University; and Dr. Gina F. Bonior, Dean of the Silliman University College of Education.
When asked how she was invited to join the team of symposium organizers, Dr Bonior said: โI am grateful to the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) because it was through a UBCHEA-funded program where I met my mentor Dr. Spencer, who recommended me to serve in the Steering Committee of the NYCU Faculty Development symposium. It was through this engagement that our faculty members learned about the abstract submission and presented their researches in an international forum.โ
Dr. Boniorโs appointment to the Steering Committee highlights the growing international recognition of Silliman Universityโs contributions to teacher education and faculty development. Her participation provided an opportunity to contribute to regional and global conversations on human-centered education, open learning, and the preparation of educators for a rapidly evolving digital world.
The participation of SUCoE faculty and leadership in the symposium affirms the Collegeโs continuing commitment to academic excellence, international engagement, research productivity, and educational innovation in support of future-ready teaching and learning.

A team of Teacher Education Council National Assessors and Validators conducted a field visit to Silliman University from May 21 to 23, 2026, as part of the renewal process for the Silliman University College of Education's designation as a Center of Excellence in Teacher Education.
SUCoE has consistently held this distinction since the enactment of Republic Act No. 7784, otherwise known as the Excellence in Teacher Education Act of 1994. The field visit served to validate the College's reported accomplishments, innovations, and continuing commitment to excellence in teacher preparation.
Over the years, SUCoE has remained proactive in responding to the rapidly evolving educational landscape of the 21st century. Through curriculum innovation, outcomes-based teacher preparation, strengthened partnerships with schools and communities, expanded research productivity, international collaborations, technology integration, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, the College continues to prepare future educators who are responsive to the needs of diverse learners and capable of leading educational transformation.
Teacher Education Department Chairperson Dr. Jasper Eric Catan expressed his gratitude to the TEC for the opportunity to showcase the College's accomplishments and continuing efforts toward excellence. He emphasized that beyond recognition and prestige, the Center of Excellence distinction serves as a daily reminder of SUCoE's responsibility to uphold the highest standards of teacher education and to contribute meaningfully to the development of schools, communities, and the teaching profession.
In a statement, SUCoE Dean Dr. Gina Fontejon Bonior conveyed her appreciation to the faculty and staff who worked tirelessly in preparing the extensive documentation required for the evaluation. She likewise thanked the University administration through its Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research Dr. Lily Ann D. Bautista and Director of Quality Instruction and Excellence Dr. Theresa Guino-o for its support, which has enabled the College to sustain a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement. Dean Bonior also expressed particular gratitude to the students and alumni from different batches who came together in solidarity to support the College's renewal application, describing their collective participation as a powerful testament to the enduring Silliman spirit defined by shared commitment and strong sense of community.
As education continues to undergo significant transformation, SUCoE remains steadfast in its mission of producing competent, compassionate, research-oriented, and future-ready educators who can thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
