šŸ‡µšŸ‡ Dumaguete: The Sleeping Giant of Philippine Football

Few people realize that Dumaguete isn’t just a charming university city it’s also a brewing powerhouse of football. āš½ļø

At Manila Montet, we’ve even had the chance to host some talented players from Dumaguete a city where football runs in the veins and young talents are waiting for their shot to shine.

šŸŸļø At the heart of this dream stands the Gov. Mariano F. Perdices Memorial Coliseum not just a stadium, but a symbol of Dumaguete’s ambition. It’s more than a football field: it’s an athletic complex where young players train, where the track oval hums with energy, and where the city’s hopes for football greatness quietly take shape.

But what makes Dumaguete truly special is its people — its homegrown players who are already making waves on the national stage.

Here are a few:

Julio Antonio B. Yoldi: A Silliman University student and key player for Football Kings United, selected for the Philippine U‑16 national team.

Aaron Nathan D. Dionaldo, John Mekhi L. Lagahit, and Francis Gabriel O. Maturan. Also from Football Kings United, part of the squad for the U‑16 national championship.

Zara Gabriella Danieles, Kelsy Skye Anub, and Alexis Abestano — Teenage players from Dumaguete drafted to represent the Philippines internationally.

Kyla Jan Aragones Inquig — Played for the Philippines women’s national team.

Marlon PiƱero — Played for the national team and the Philippine Navy.

Percy PiƱero Guarin — Former national team player, started in Dumaguete and Silliman University.

These names are proof: Dumaguete is not lacking in talent. Kids grow up kicking the ball in the streets, on school grounds, or at local clubs and some of them are already wearing the national colors.

Yet, the city’s full potential hasn’t been fully awakened. The Perdices Coliseum, despite being an incredible facility, has faced challenges: there have been worries about underuse and calls for stronger partnerships to leverage its capacity and infrastructure.

But here’s the thing: the raw materials are all there.

Local grassroots programs are also building a foundation.

When you combine that with the stadium, the stories, and the hungry youth, you get something powerful.

Dumaguete is a sleeping giant.

A giant that’s quietly producing national-level footballers.

A giant with a beautiful home stadium ready to be a stage for big dreams.

A giant that just needs the right support more visibility, more investment, more belief.

If Dumaguete wakes up, it could become one of the most important football hubs in the Philippines.
