The SU Language Learning Center congratulates its teachers and members of the secretariat for successfully presenting their research paper during the 8th Linguistic Society of the Philippines International Conference held at West Visayas State University in Iloilo City last April 23-25, 2026.

Lead researcher and main author Gemmella M. Tebio, together with co-researchers John Edgar C. Rubio and Deo Mar E. Suasin, shared the writing process and the initial results and insights of the paper titled “Move Structure Analysis of Literature Reviews by Grade 11 STEAM Students of Silliman University: Basis for a Research Writing Module.” The panel session was attended by language educators and students who also actively engaged and asked questions regarding their research writing queries and experiences.

This attendance to the conference is a testament of the LLC team’s commitment to advancing language learning and teaching through research and scholarly exchange.

"When I first arrived in Dumaguete, I was a bit nervous. But my buddy and my teachers taught me the most important lesson: 'Way kurat!' (no worries/it's okay!).

I'll never forget the struggle of trying to hop onto a moving pedicab (tricycle) for the first time, or the realization that 'Filipino Time' is actually a very relaxed way of living.̀ I think 50% of my blood is now made of Jollibee's Chickenjoy and 'Silvanas' From Sans Rival! But beyond the food, I am truly moved by your 'Gugma' (Love) and kindness. To my buddy: thank you for being my human Google Maps. To my teachers: thank you for your patience, even when I struggled to find the right words."

Excerpt from the speech of Ryuho Tengan during the Intensive English Program Graduation Ceremony of the Kyushu International University students.

Congratulations, IntEP students! We are proud of you!

IntEP Log: Immersion Classes

We look back on the moments that made this Immersion Class meaningful. From feeling overwhelmed by the size of the campus and the crowd, to slowly finding our confidence in speaking English, every day was a step forward.

We shared our culture with other Silliman students by teaching hiragana and introducing Japanese traditions. We also noticed how classes here involve more group work and interaction, quite different from the more individual-focused setup in Japan. We were especially surprised by how friendly and positive Filipino students are!😊

- Yuma

Beyond the language classes, IntEP students are also given the opportunity to sit in senior high school and college classes to observe and interact with other students in classroom settings. This provides them with additional view of intercultural practices in education and real-world application of the language.

IntEP log: A Wonderful Experience at Forest Camp ✨🌿

“Forest Camp is very fun. I can really feel the beauty of nature. What I liked the most was the meat bread—it was so delicious! I was very excited to go there, and everyone was swimming in the pool and playing games. I even took some pictures to remember the day. After all the fun, I was so tired that I fell asleep right away.

Next time, I hope to explore the Sunday Market and visit the hot spring for another great experience!”

Interviewed by Nel Tolete

To realize the 5Cs of SU, we don’t just study inside the classroom, we experience culture, nature, and real-life conversations together. 🌏💬

IntEP log: Pickleball @ Sunset

After our long walk around the streets of Dumaguete for the city tour, we headed to Sunset Pickleball Court to engage in some games and physical activities. The place was quite distant from the downtown area, so we rode an easyride going there. 🌄

When we got at the venue, we immediately reviewed the rules of the game and occupied the two courts. In the first few minutes, we were still getting the hang of it, but eventually, we felt comfortable and really enjoyed the rest of the time.

Apparently, pickleball 🥒🎾 is gaining popularity in the Philippines. It was fun joining and watching the games, even our professors didn’t miss the chance to play!

We capped the night with a delicious meal of grilled chicken 🐔 at Jo’s Chicken Inato — a well-known restaurant in the City. It was such a day of fun and frenzy; moments that make our IntEP experience worthwhile.
