Silbo Gomero isn't just random whistling-it is a complex, fully functional language born from geography. When deep valleys cut you off from your neighbors, you don't stop talking, you just change how you talk!

Centuries ago, locals turned their spoken words into high-pitched whistles to warn each other of danger or pass news across the terrain. Rather than letting it fade away in the modern era, it is now a mandatory subject in their local primary schools to ensure future generations preserve this beautiful socio-cultural heritage.

Nature changes, but human creativity always finds a way to connect.

Communication takes many forms, and this September, we’re shining a light on one of them 🤟✨

Deaf Awareness Month is a time to recognize the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community by their language and their right to be heard in ways that go beyond sound. Filipino Sign Language (FSL) is not just a set of hand movements; it is a rich, living language with its own grammar and history.

Too often, inclusion is treated as an afterthought. This month is a reminder that accessibility should not be the exception—it should be the standard. Whether it’s learning a few basic signs, supporting Deaf-led spaces, or simply being more mindful in how we communicate, small actions add up to a more inclusive community.

This September, let’s listen beyond sound, learn beyond words, and make space for every voice! 🩵
