As Silliman University celebrates Intramurals this week, we are reminded that sports are more than competition — they are spaces where students grow, connect, and discover their strengths.
In “Afterschool Sports Participation and Psychological Needs Fulfillment in Physical Education Among Filipino High School Students,” Jonathan Y. Cagas highlights how participation in sports nurtures students’ sense of autonomy, competence, and belonging. Beyond physical activity, sports become meaningful experiences that support motivation, well-being, and personal development.
Intrams is not only about winning medals or bringing home trophies. It is about teamwork, resilience, school spirit, and the shared energy that unites the Silliman community. In every cheer, every practice, and every game, students build confidence and connection.
As we continue this week of celebration, may we recognize the deeper value of sports — as opportunities to grow not only stronger in body, but also in character and community.

On this day that celebrates love, we greet all our readers a joyful and meaningful Valentine’s Day.
Love is not only something we feel. It is something we reflect on, learn from, and live out in our everyday lives.
𝐈𝐧 “𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬: 𝐀𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 ‘𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡, 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞, 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐫. 𝐋𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐫𝐨,” we are reminded that reading is a deeply personal experience. Students bring their faith, memories, and lived experiences into the text, discovering meaning that connects literature to life.
This Valentine’s Day, may we remember that love, like literature, invites reflection. When we read with openness and sincerity, we uncover insights not only in the story but also within ourselves.
May your day be filled with faith, love, and moments that inspire deeper understanding.

Our hearts go out to the families and communities affected by the recent storms that have devastated parts of the Philippines. In moments like these, it can feel impossible to understand why such suffering happens. Yet faith invites us to see that amid the destruction, there is also a call—to care, to rebuild, and to rediscover hope.
📖 In “A Heartbroken God Deals with Rebellion: A Theology of Calamity Based on the Flood Story (Genesis 6:5–9:17)” by Lily F. Apura , we are reminded of a God who grieves with His people. Calamity is not merely punishment—it is a painful process through which brokenness can be transformed into renewal. Even when nature brings judgment, God’s heart remains with those who suffer.
🙏 May we stand in solidarity with the victims, offer comfort where we can, and believe that healing will come—both for our land and our hearts.

The recent passing of beloved influencers, even those surrounded by families who openly advocate for mental health, reminds us that awareness alone is not enough. Understanding su***de requires us to look deeper into the social and emotional forces that quietly shape a person’s pain.
“Towards a Push Pull Theoretical Understanding in the Sociology of Su***de: Revisiting What We Know and What We Can Explore” by Mark Anthony Mujer Quintos (University of the Philippines) invites us to see su***de not as an individual failure, but as a complex social reality influenced by connection, pressure, and meaning.
May this encourage us to listen more, to reach out with compassion, and to help create spaces where people can truly feel understood.

The recent earthquake in Cebu Province has deeply reminded us of the challenges and fragility of life during times of disaster. While the damage is seen in collapsed homes and disrupted communities, the deeper struggles often lie in the hearts of survivors as they cope with fear, loss, and uncertainty.
A study published in the Silliman Journal shares that even when spirituality and resiliency do not always directly align, both serve as important sources of meaning and strength. Survivors may find it difficult to move forward, yet within their journey lies the courage to hope and rebuild.
Let us continue to keep the people of Cebu in our prayers. May we also be moved to extend compassion and support, so that together, we can help restore not just homes but also the spirit of healing and resilience. 🙏🙏🙏
