Foundation University celebrates the remarkable achievement of our very own Dean of the Graduate School and Concurrent Director for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Felipe B. Sullera Jr., LPT., ED.D., at the 13th International Conference on Social Sciences (ICOSS) 2026 in Bali, Indonesia.

Dr. Sullera was honored with the Session Best Presentation award for his oral presentation entitled “Integrated Climate Change Education: Impact on Students’ Civic Responsibility” co-authored with Kyle Saavedra, Klint Sandoval, Emerose Matbagon, Jhean Cañas, and Daniel Roy Ibañez, during the session on "Development Studies, Geography, and Social Transformation."

Dr. Sullera’s award directly supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by demonstrating how climate change education fosters responsible citizenship. Presenting these insights at this international conference in Indonesia advances SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by promoting global knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑰𝑪𝑶𝑵

Revival of the Innovation Consortium of Oriental Negros (ICON) with DOST Silliman University Technology Business Incubator (SU-TBI) recently welcomed delegates for a comprehensive site visit and strategic dialogue aimed at fortifying local research, development, and enterprise.

The engagement highlighted the university’s scientific infrastructure through an immersive tour of key facilities, including the MedTech Molecular Laboratory, the Biology Laboratory, and the SU-TBI Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab). These facilities serve as critical hubs for academic research, technological prototyping, and scalable community solutions.

A central highlight of the day’s agenda was the foundational meeting to revive the Innovation Consortium of Oriental Negros (ICON). Witnessed and supported by key academic institutions, including the The Office of Research and Extension Services (ORES) of Foundation University, this multi-sectoral initiative bridges the academe, industry, civic partners, and relevant government agencies to foster a synchronized, sustainable framework for innovation across Negros Oriental. By revitalizing ICON, the stakeholders aim to streamline knowledge transfer, accelerate technology commercialization, and drive inclusive economic growth in the region.

Aligned with the United Nations sustainable developmental Goals, these initiatives support SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

𝑻𝑯𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑫𝑺 𝑶𝑭 𝑶𝑷𝑷𝑶𝑹𝑻𝑼𝑵𝑰𝑻𝒀: 𝑬𝑴𝑷𝑶𝑾𝑬𝑹𝑰𝑵𝑮 𝑳𝑶𝑪𝑨𝑳 𝑾𝑬𝑨𝑽𝑬𝑹𝑺

Foundation University, through the Textile and Creative Industries Institute, chaired by Mr. Christopher Bernard S. Benong, has forged a partnership with the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), represented by Ms. Nena Locsin, to explore opportunities for strengthening and empowering local fiber communities.

In partnership with the LGU of Bais, People’s Organization (PO) in Barangay Sab-ahan, an Indigenous Peoples community, are set to benefit from specialized loom weaving training and opportunities to access loom machines that can strengthen their sustainable livelihood activities.

This partnership is also being grounded in respect for the community’s rights and cultural protocols. The Office of Research and Extension Services (ORES), together with LGU Bais, recently went to Mabinay to formally seek permission from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) for ORES to conduct research and establish Barangay Sab-ahan as a community extension partner.

At the research level, Foundation University is also exploring sugarcane leaf fiber as a potential material for textile development, turning an agricultural byproduct into a possible resource for sustainable fiber innovation.

𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙎𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙁𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣!

Following their successful Capstone Presentation, the College of Computer Studies (CCS) student researchers presented "MangroScan" to University President Victor Vicente “Dean” Sinco and University Chancellor Dr. Charlotte Cariño. MangroScan is an innovative system that utilizes autonomous drone flights for mangrove species classification, tree detection, and structural assessment.

The project has now moved into its field-testing phase at the ORES research site, bringing their innovation from the classroom into a complex mangrove ecosystem.

The initial flight allows the team to document field challenges, gather valuable data, and identify areas for technical improvement as they work toward a more reliable platform for environmental research and conservation.

ORES congratulates the CCS student researchers for turning their technical skills and ideas into technology-driven environmental research.

Last August, the Office of Research and Extension Services (ORES), together with the College of Nursing, conducted community profiling to better understand the community’s needs, living conditions, experiences, resources, and priorities.

By listening to the community and understanding its social realities, the activity provides a stronger foundation for research and responsive community extension programs.
