: Silliman University’s Growing and Nurturing Forests for a Resilient and Sustainable Future (SU-GForest) Project, together with Marine Biology interns from the Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (SU-IEMS), helped promote environmental awareness among young people during the 4th Environment Youth Camp held June 9, 2026 at the Sipalay City Greenbelt Eco Park and Critical Habitat.

The youth camp formed part of Sipalay City’s month-long celebration of the 26th Environment Month, carrying the theme “Inspired by Nature: For Climate, For Our Future.” Organized to foster environmental stewardship among the youth, the camp gathered high school and college students, as well as out-of-school youth from various barangays across the city.

: Silliman University (SU) graduate student Jean Asuncion T. Utzurrum co-authored and presented a research study on shark and ray bycatch in Philippine small-scale fisheries during the 5th Sharks International Conference 2026, the world’s largest global gathering of scientists and conservationists working on shark, ray, and chimaera research and conservation, held May 3 to 8, 2026 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Held for the first time in Asia, Sharks International 2026 gathered more than 800 participants from 84 countries and featured over 600 oral and poster presentations focused on advancing science-based conservation solutions for threatened marine species.

Utzurrum, a Master of Science in Marine Biology student under the SU Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS), presented the poster titled “Shark and ray bycatch in Philippine small-scale fisheries,” which she co-authored with Elson Q. Aca and A.A. Yaptinchay. The presentation was part of Poster Session A held on May 4 and 5.

: Silliman University and its partner institutions conducted a technical training and field-based survey from April to May 2026 as part of an ongoing research initiative assessing marine mammal populations, fishery bycatch, and dolphin-watching activities in the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape.

The training formed a key component of the study by preparing participants to carry out cetacean surveys and field data collection using standardized scientific methods.

Dr. Louella L. Dolar, the country’s foremost marine mammal expert and an Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee, leads the research initiative together with Dr. Edna R. Sabater of the Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS), as well as IEMS students Sebastian Cordial and Ma. Katrina Andrea Tupas.

Silliman University shares findings from the Bais Bay Habitat Assessment last May 11, 2026.

🌱 ABOUT THE EVENT:

The Bais Bay Environmental Forum gathered together scientists, local leaders, and communities to address the impacts of the October 2025 URC Spent Wash Spill on North Bais Bay and the Tañon Strait.

SU scientists and researchers shared results from critical scientific assessments of the spill's extent, water quality, and ecosystem health. The forum became a platform for urgent dialogue and further emphasized the need for corporate accountability and to take immediate, collective action to protect our environment.

: Silliman University’s (SU) Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences (IEMS) is helping shape a science-based fisheries closure policy in Siquijor Province through Dr. Aileen P. Maypa, IEMS director, who is leading technical training and research support for the province’s proposed unified “Fishing Holiday” ordinance.

Maypa served as a resource speaker and technical expert during the Training-Workshop on Fish Gonadal Maturity Staging on May 13–14, 2026, at Siquijor State College, equipping fisheries personnel and researchers with scientific methods to determine fish reproductive cycles, which will inform seasonal fishing closures.
