We call it “defiance” when our kids melt down because we ask them why they haven’t packed their backpack, still-

But imagine being 4 feet tall in a world where giants rush you through a day you don’t understand—where no one explains what’s happening next, where your curiosity about any rescue is brushed aside, where food textures feel overwhelming, and where you have zero control over anything.

That’s not defiance. That’s survival.

The average kid receives 20+ commands per hour with almost no explanation or choice. Their meltdowns aren’t manipulation—they’re communication from a brain that literally cannot process this much uncertainty.

The solution isn’t more discipline. It’s more information. It’s tiny choices within firm boundaries. It’s verbal previews of transitions. It’s slowing down enough to narrate what’s coming next.

Your kid doesn’t need to control the world. They just need to understand it.
