On August 21, 1983, Benigno โNinoyโ Aquino Jr. returned to the Philippines after nearly three years of exile in the United States. A former senator and prominent critic of the Marcos administration, Aquino had been imprisoned during the period of martial law before eventually leaving the country. His decision to return came at a time when political opposition remained heavily restricted and tensions surrounding the government continued to grow.
Ninoy returned amid his continuing political opposition to Marcos regime and his advocacy for democratic change. His commitment to the Filipino people became closely associated with his famous words, On August 21, his plane landed at the Manila International Airport. Shortly after he descended from the aircraft, Aquino was assassinated. He was 50 years old.
The assassination sent shockwaves throughout the Philippines. Public grief and outrage intensified opposition to the Marcos regime and helped galvanize a growing movement for political change. Three years later, in February 1986, millions of Filipinos gathered along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in what became known as the The largely peaceful uprising culminated in the departure of Ferdinand Marcos from the presidency and the assumption of Corazon โCoryโ Aquino, Ninoyโs widow, as president of the Philippines.
Ninoy Aquino Day is commemorated every August 21 to honor his life and sacrifice. Through ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ฏ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ ๐๐ฐ๐ ๐ก๐ผ. ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ, signed into law in 2004, the date was declared a ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ป๐ผ๐ป-๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ต๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐. The observance provides an opportunity for Filipinos to revisit a significant period in the countryโs history and reflect on the struggles that shaped the restoration of democratic institutions.
For the younger generation, however, remembering Ninoy Aquino should extend beyond memorizing a name, a date, or a famous quotation. His story offers an opportunity to understand the value of civic participation, freedom of expression, democratic institutions, and the responsibility of citizens to remain informed about the history of their country. The democratic freedoms we value today were shaped by generations who lived through difficult periods and made choices that carried significant consequences.
More than four decades after that August afternoon, Ninoy Aquinoโs legacy remains part of the continuing conversation about democracy and citizenship in the Philippines. His assassination became a defining moment in the countryโs history, and his return home continues to be remembered as an act of political courage.
As we commemorate ๐๐ข๐ง๐จ๐ฒ ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ง๐จ ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐, may we remember not only the man who returned home, but also the ideals associated with his sacrifice. History is not merely a record of what happened before us; it is a lesson that challenges each generation to understand the past and consider what it is willing to stand for.
