According to Filipino food historians Felice Prudente Sta. Maria and Ambeth Ocampo, HALO-HALO was based from the Japanese dessert called βkakigoriβ, which is traditionally made up of sweetened milk and shaved ice. This was introduced by the Japanese in the Philippines during the pre-war era.
With the addition of local ingredients such as saging na saba, nata de coco, macapuno, kamote, langka, and pinipig, we have already indigenised this delicious ice-based dessert, and have now successfully made it our own ππππ§‘β€οΈ

π
π
Yes, the Spanish conquistadors brought and distributed the lycopene-rich fruit (YES, TOMATO IS A FRUIT!) throughout their colonies (including the Philippines) in the 1500s!

π¨π³
Yes po! TAHO (Filipino soybean pudding with brown sugar syrup and tapioca pearls) originated in China and was introduced to the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries during the height of the maritime trade, centuries ago.
Over the years, TAHO has evolved and became a part of every Juanβs life. This simple yet very comforting breakfast item/snack is now undeniably an integral part of Filipino food culture π΅ππ΅ππ΅π

π¨π³π΅π
BALUT (fertilised duck egg) was introduced to the Philippines by Chinese traders, centuries ago. Duck egg fertilisation was originally developed in China to prolong the shelf-life of eggs as refrigerators werenβt invented during that time yet.
But despite sharing the same culinary heritage with some Asian countries, we have successfully made this delicacy our very own. Popularly believed as an aphrodisiac, BALUT, as poet Tom Agulto says, βis deeply embedded in Philippine food cultureβ, and will remain to be a food icon in the Philippines for many, many centuries π΅ππ΅ππ΅π
