Project SCILAW was derived from the Ilokano word โSilaw,โ meaning light, symbolizing enlightenment through Science, sustainability, and service. It integrated SCI to reflect its foundation in scientific innovation and environmental stewardship. It embodied Bamasesamar National High Schoolโs aim to nurture life, learning, and the environment through sustainable initiatives that lighted the path toward progress and purpose.
The project was conceptualized to address greenery and food-producing areas, waste disposal, environmental awareness, and the need for student-led livelihood programs. Its objectives were to: (1) promote sustainable environmental practices through greening and eco-friendly innovations; (2) integrate agricultural and livelihood opportunities into science learning; and (3) strengthen partnerships in promoting environmental protection, social responsibility, and holistic well-being.
At the heart of SCILAW was the school nursery, which provided seedlings for all greening and reforestation initiatives. The school conducted ๐๐ง๐๐-๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ฟ๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐จ and maintained the ๐๐ช๐ก๐๐ฎ๐๐ฃ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐๐ง๐๐ก๐๐ฃ through ๐๐ง๐ค๐ฌ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฃ๐จ, ๐๐๐ง๐ซ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ค๐ฅ๐ to promote food security and sustainable gardening. The ๐๐ค๐๐ ๐ฎ ๐๐ง๐ค๐ช๐ฃ๐๐จ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐๐ก๐ค๐ช๐ง๐๐จ๐๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฃ๐จ project turned a rocky area into a productive vegetable garden, proving that even unyielding soil could be transformed through persistence, care, and teamwork.
Collaboration lay at the core of SCILAWโs success. In partnership with the STEP Club, the school launched the ๐๐ช๐จ๐๐ง๐ค๐ค๐ข ๐พ๐๐๐๐๐๐ง๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ง๐ค๐๐๐๐ฉ and the ๐๐๐ก๐ช๐ข๐ช๐จ๐ ๐พ๐ง๐๐จ๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐ค๐๐๐๐ฉ, featuring mushroom and malunggay crisps which are available in the school, supported by IPAD (International Professional Association of Dingras). These demonstrated how science and entrepreneurship could merge to promote innovation. These also empowered students to become advocates of eco-livelihood and green enterprise.
In December 2024, Bamasesamar NHS was honored as First Runner-Up in INTAYON, receiving โฑ17,000, which was strategically allocated to four priority initiatives. It supported the ๐ผ๐๐ค๐ฅ๐ฉ-๐-๐๐พ๐๐๐๐ (๐๐ช๐จ๐ฉ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ก๐ ๐พ๐ค๐ข๐ข๐ช๐ฃ๐๐ฉ๐ฎ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ง๐ค๐ซ๐๐ข๐๐ฃ๐ฉ ๐๐๐ง๐ค๐ช๐๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ค๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ช๐ฉ๐ง๐๐๐๐) in Barangay Sagpatan, a program focused on park beautification and a mini environmental seminar for children. The remaining funds ๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐จ๐๐ ๐๐๐ง๐ , helped establish the ๐๐ง๐๐๐ 7 ๐พ๐ค๐ข๐๐ค๐ง๐ฉ ๐๐ค๐ค๐ข (๐๐ง๐ค๐๐๐๐ฉ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐๐: ๐ฝ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐ง ๐ผ๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ค๐ง ๐๐ช๐ง๐ฉ๐ช๐ง๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ค๐ช๐ฉ๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ค๐ง๐ฉ๐ช๐ฃ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐จ) through the leadership of YES-O and parental support, and contributed to the purchase of a ๐๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐จ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ค๐ง ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ค๐ง๐๐ฉ๐ค๐ง๐ฎ, reinforcing classroom instruction.
The school also prioritized park improvement and beautification through ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ ๐๐๐๐ค๐ค๐ก, ๐ฝ๐ง๐๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐๐๐, implemented through a strong partnership between the SSLG and the school administration. This collaboration ensured that public spaces remained clean, safe, and inspiring. Furthermore, solar lights under ๐๐ค๐ก๐๐ง-๐ฅ๐ค๐ฌ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ช๐ฉ๐ช๐ง๐ were installed in the parks to promote safety, energy efficiency, and environmental consciousness.
Project SCILAW upheld sustainable practices through ๐๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ ๐๐ค๐ฉ, ๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ ๐๐ค๐ฉ, ๐๐ง๐ค๐ข ๐๐๐๐จ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐ฝ๐๐๐จ, and the ๐น๐: ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ข ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐. These initiatives encouraged recycling, reuse, and the creative transformation of waste materials into functional items such as garden ornaments and recycled flower displays that showcased studentsโ creativity.
Project SCILAW reinforced the schoolโs leadership in environmental education. The project also integrated seminars and environmental awareness campaigns through ๐๐๐๐ง๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ค๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐ช๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ to cultivate a generation of learners who were informed, proactive, and environmentally conscious.
From Rocky Grounds to Flourishing Greens, from Malamush Crisps to solar-lit parks, and from community engagement to environmental leadership, Project SCILAW remained a beacon of light that guided Bamasesamar National High School toward a greener, brighter, and more sustainable future.
