𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 𝗙𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘: 𝗔 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘆 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆

Today marks the solemn anniversary of the assassination of Senator 𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙤 “𝘕𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘺” 𝙎. 𝘼𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙤 𝙅𝙧., a crucial moment in our nation’s history. More than just a day of memory, 𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗢𝗬 𝗔𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗡𝗢 𝗗𝗔𝗬—officially declared through Republic Act No. 9256 in 2004—stands as both a remembrance of his courageous sacrifice and a reminder of democracy’s value. It is observed as a special 𝘕𝘰𝘯-𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘺.

Born in November 27, 1932, in Concepcion, Tarlac, Philippines—Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. came from a well-known political family and was a brilliant student and journalist—even becoming the youngest correspondent to cover the Korean War at age 17 before entering politics. As the first senator at the age of 34, he was known for his charisma and powerful speeches against corruption and injustice.

During the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, Ninoy was known as one of the most vocal and strongest critic against him. He exposed government corruption and human rights abuses. In September 21, 1972—where Marcos declared the Martial Law, Ninoy was arrested and imprisoned for almost 7 years.

In 1980, Ninoy suffered a heart attack and was allowed to go to the U.S. for medical treatment. He stayed in exile with his family but remained politically active, continuously speaking up against Marcos.

After three years of exile in the United States, Aquino returned to the Philippines on this day in 1983. Despite the many threats against his life, he remained stern, bravely expressing the quote, "The Filipino is worth dying for." He was assassinated and shot on the then-Manila International Airport (now Ninoy Aquino International Airport), igniting a national awakening that fueled the People Power Revolution of 1986.

Beyond simply remembering the death of a beloved leader, Ninoy Aquino Day honors the resilience, hope, and democratic spirit that came from his sacrifice.

With every stroke of a pen, a 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 wields their most powerful weapon—𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝.

Silence filled the room, however the sound of hasty scribbles filled the surrounding stillness. A quick pause, then the continuous tapping of pen on the wooden table had replaced the sound of scribbling. A sigh escaped the young writer's lips, but they continued jotting their thoughts on an issue. Then and there, the writer, a campus journalist, was breaking not just the silence of the room, but their own silence too.

Whilst writing, several thoughts whirred inside their head, creating a cacophonic tune. But one voice remained constant—the truth. With a steady hand, and a strong stand, the student continued to transform that inside voice into ink, responding to their calling as a campus journalist.

𝗢𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 25, 2025, we commemorate 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆—honoring 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙨 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩 across the 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 who continue to 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙠 and 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝.

Thanks to the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 (R.A. 7079), students have been given a platform to express, inform, and inspire through writing, photography, and art.
But beyond the bylines and deadlines, one question remains: What truly makes someone a campus journalist?

𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲
In this world, greed and ignorance are rampant; and change is desired by the youth. Every nation in this world has deep-rooted problems that are indistinguishable to cancer. These old issues have affected many people's lives negatively, and should therefore be addressed fully.

Campus journalism has become an outlet for students to offer their new perspectives regarding the past and present problems. From pens to screens, many students' have shared their personal experiences and new perspectives on certain issues, often challenging the unfair reality that takes place in society.

Embracing these perspectives presents an opportunity for change. It allows inclusive discussion amongst people of all ages. Everyone gets a chance to hear each other's thoughts and educate each other, thusly promoting an open mind.

𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁
They say, in order to be a good journalist, one must know how to write, photograph, and draw— depending on one's specialty. A pen, camera, and pencil can be used as an instrument to inform, educate, and call for change. By writing numerous articles, creating editorial cartoons, or building a portfolio, one’s articulation and vocabulary can be developed further. One learns how to express their voice, and make it clear in a way that it will reach its target audience.

But journalistic skills alone do not make up campus journalism. Campus journalism is also about values and ethics. Bias and distortion have pestered the world of journalism for a while, and it has been a challenge for many in the field. Young journalists should strive and persevere for the truth and improve their critical and analytical skills. Campus editors must learn how to source material and not fall prey to fake news and wrong information.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀
" 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 " is a sentiment we are often reminded; that the fate of the world lies in our hands.

Each one possesses a voice, and altogether, can create a powerful impact. Campus journalists, despite their young voices, have the power to influence people from all walks of life. Armed with an important purpose of seeking and advocating transformative change, a new force emerges—a force that will pave the way for the next generation to follow.

The pursuit of truth, integrity, and accountability is a must for every journalist, may they be young or old. Power is within the youth's voice; and so, when you open your mouth, speak only the truth and embody the purpose of campus journalism.

𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟 | 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁: 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆

As the EDSA streets fill up with angry Filipino marches, and chants that could be heard from the other side of the globe, only one goal lies inside each one's minds, "NEVER AGAIN, MARCOS," while holding up the letter "L" symbol using their hands. This moment has been engraved on every graveyard site that the Marcos family created during a dictator's oppression to its countrymen, disguised as "help". It really does beg the everlasting question of: why does history keep on repeating itself in the Philippine government?

The Marcos regime is the "Golden Era" of the Philippines as per the elderly, but were they merely blinded by the scraps that the Marcoses provided them during that timeline of their lives? Corrupted politicians are prevalent in this country, and the Marcos family is not any different from those filthy animals that did nothing but ruin, brainwash, and hold Filipinos hostage under the oath of nothingness. Believing that there is a brighter tomorrow, a future so beautiful that it can only exist in a dream, that if torture was needed Filipinos are willing to undergo—turned out to be an awfully vivid nightmare that each innocent life that lived through it wished that they have never existed in such a sticky situation.

All the lives that have been removed from its existence, erased from history, vanished from ever telling the truth that they have endured not telling due to the risk of losing their lives, where did all of that go? Day by day, the Philippines' current president alongside his family swears that during their father's ruling, lives were changed for the better; that was all for show. The fact that the concrete is not as strong as they would have thought reveals the cracks that form after a huge disaster hits. And in this case, the Marcoses are trying too hard to fill up those cracks which reek of blood, sweat, and tears of innocent lives that they have taken—for money was not enough of a bribery to shut them up.

Once a Filipino knows that something is up, upholding the truth is something they do best, taking down powerful people for the sake of money, and power itself is something that takes a whole nation to accomplish. The dedication, and love for the country that their veins' blood are filled with cannot be messed with, because once a Filipino says something, always expect the act that follows it.

Filipino citizens hold the power to vote for who sits at the prestigious chairs at the Malacañang Palace, yes. But why, just why does history keep on repeating itself?

Change starts from one vote at a time, do not create the same mistake our ancestors have done, choose the person who truly deserves the golden seats at the palace where a group of people run an entire country, do not commit the same mass su***de that had been done before. Tell yourself to ponder about the decisions that lead up to the future of the country that your DNA is filled with. Vote for who upholds the truth, and nothing but the truth only, under the oath of the law.

Revising the so-called "golden history" of the Philippines with lies that silence victims—is it really something new? Or something so overdone that Filipinos already contracted Stockholm Syndrome from it? No matter how much concrete is poured in through the cracks of time, it will never undo the damage that had already been long done.

Power to the People!

The 𝙀𝘿𝙎𝘼 𝙋𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟱, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 has been declared as a Special Working Holiday. To commemorate this significant chapter in Philippine history, the University of Nueva Caceres- Bataan will have no classes on the said date.

Now, us Filipinos have the duty to take a step back, and take a good look at the torturous view that silenced the truth, and buried those who dared to expose the tainted life an oppressor once lived through. Do not conform to a person that is trying to revise the truth about the self-declared "Golden Era."

May we never forget the truth of our history, and honor the sacrifices of the Filipinos who fought for the democracy that we have today.

May we continue the fight to uphold democracy at all costs.

The official student publication of the 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘶𝘦𝘷𝘢 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴 - 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘢𝘯, dubbed “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲”, once again showcased its exemplary expertise in the field of journalism in the recently concluded Division Schools Press Conference 2025 at Pablo Roman National High School, February 5-7.

By securing the 𝟯𝙧𝙙 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝟰𝙩𝙝 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝟱𝙩𝙝 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘍𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘨𝘦, and ranking 𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋𝐋 in the School Paper Contest (English), The New Flame successfully advanced to the Regional School Press Conference 2025.

The creation of the school paper was led by 𝘔𝘳. 𝘕𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘗. 𝘛𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘰 (School Paper Adviser) and The New Flame Editorial Board, under the leadership of 𝘑𝘰𝘢𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘯 𝘋. 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘪 (Editor-in-Chief).
