From the University of the Philippines Press:

𝐔𝐏 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐗 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐄 🏳️‍🌈

In celebration of Pride Month, poet (and UPD Department of English and Comparative Literature BA alumnus) Charlie Samuya Veric selected a passage from his poetry collection, The Love of a Certain Age.
On why he chose this particular piece, he writes:

“Love is central to q***r experience, like all human experiences. Even among nonhuman animals there are expressions of affection. But what distinguishes q***r love is the fact that when it dares to speak its name, it’s met with revulsion. The Love of a Certain Age explodes that taboo and describes the most tender elements of q***r loving: To dare to touch, and by touching, to be real.”

Mula sa Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature:

Last Call for Entries to the 76th Palanca Awards

Your work could be the next to be celebrated in Philippine literature. Submit your entries to the 76th Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature before the deadline on JUNE 30, 2026.

Official contest rules and entry forms are available on the Contest page of the Palanca Awards website at . All submissions must be completed online through the website, as the Carlos Palanca Foundation WILL NOT ACCEPT PRINTED OR EMAIL submissions for any category.

The Palanca Awards is open to Filipino citizens or former Filipino citizens of all ages, whether based locally or abroad. Authors may submit only one (1) entry per category, as follows:

● Novel and Nobela;

● English Division – Short Story, Short Story for Children, Essay, Poetry, Poetry Written for Children, One-act Play, and Full-length Play;

● Filipino Division – Maikling Kuwento, Maikling Kuwentong Pambata, Sanaysay, Tula, Tula Para sa mga Bata, Dulang May Isang Yugto, Dulang Ganap ang Haba, and Dulang Pampelikula;

● Regional Languages Division – Short Story-Cebuano, Short Story-Hiligaynon, and Short Story-Ilokano;

● Kabataan Division – Kabataan Essay (English) and Kabataan Sanaysay (Filipino)

For the Kabataan Division, participants must respond to the following topics:

• Kabataan Essay: “As the world becomes more connected yet increasingly shaped by differing ideologies, beliefs, and perspectives, young people face the challenge of understanding the divisions around them and helping shape a more hopeful future. How can today’s youth rise above differences and become bridges of understanding, promote peaceful coexistence, and help build societies rooted in empathy, mutual respect, and collective progress?”

Eligible works include unpublished or unproduced pieces, as well as works first published or produced from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. For the Novel and Nobela categories, published entries must have first appeared between June 1, 2024 and June 30, 2026. Only unproduced works are accepted for Dulang Pampelikula. Works that win another prize before midnight of June 30, 2026 are not eligible.

Mula sa UP Vargas Museum:

The UP Vargas Museum collaborates with the University of Washington’s Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture for the Building a Global Barangay project.

The University of Washington (UW) Global Innovation Fund recently awarded a grant to support a partnership between the UW’s Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture and the Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center to link their holdings with communities around the world. “Building a Global Barangay: Engaging Philippine Collections at Home and Abroad” is a digital-focused endeavor that will bridge local and international communities in learning about and sharing reflections on cultural belongings, memory making, and collective identifications that would have otherwise been out of range for many audiences situated outside of either museum. The Burke Museum houses more than 4,200 Philippine cultural belongings and archival materials, some of which date back to the 1898 Philippine-American War. The UP Vargas Museum, on the other hand, is home to the collection of art, books, archives, memorabilia, coins, and stamps from Jorge B. Vargas, a significant political figure in twentieth-century Philippines and an alumnus of the University of the Philippines. This partnership hopes to cultivate both physical and digital spaces for students and community centers interested in learning about and producing reflections on these linked collections.
