On this day in 1995, the first version of the Java programming language was released by Sun Microsystems.

Java is a general-purpose computer programming language specifically designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible. It was originally developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems and released as a core component of Sun Microsystems' Java platform.

It is intended to let application developers "write once, run anywhere" (WORA), meaning that compiled Java code could run on all platforms that support Java without the need for recompilation. It also enables programmers to write computer instructions using English-based commands instead of having to write in numeric codes.

Today, Java is one of the most popular programming languages in use, particularly for client-server web applications, with a reported 9 million developers.

What programming language are you using or learning?
