In celebration of this yearโs theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," we are highlighting the changing work aspirations of Filipino children.
Childrenโs work aspirations are heavily shaped by gender socialization. For instance, 10-year-old boys aspire to work in fields traditionally stereotyped as male-dominated (e.g., construction, law enforcement, engineering), while 10-year-old girls expressed interest in occupations stereotyped as โfeminineโ (e.g., creative, nurturing, or caring roles).

Data from the first wave (2016) and sixth wave (2022) of the Longitudinal Cohort Study on the Filipino Child (LCSFC) were used to make the comparison. LCSFC is a national study that tracks transitions faced by young Filipinos in relation to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, following them from age 10 in 2016 until they reach 24 in 2030.
Tracking the work aspirations of the youth is vital in laying the groundwork to guarantee opportunities and a sustainable future for all - as young people across different cultures and countries continuously strive to achieve.
