The UPD CMu Music Education Department celebrates the life of Prof. Mauricia D. Borromeo (July 23, 1939 - August 2, 2025) - a life that has touched Music Education majors of many generations.

Excerpts from Musika Jornal 10 (2016):
Mauricia Borromeo obtained Graduate Music Degrees from the University of the Philippines Diliman (Piano, 1971) and the University of Michigan Ann Arbor (Music Education, 1973), where she was twice awarded the Levi Barbour Scholarships for Oriental Women and was elected to the Pi Kappa Lambda, the USA National Music Honor Society. The second Barbour Scholarship enabled her to earn credits in several graduate ethnomusicology courses and was active in initiating Philippine cultural activities in the Ann Arbor Filipino Community and co-founded PUNLA, dedicated to introducing Philippine Culture to American-born Filipino children in Ann Arbor. Reappointed to the UP College of Music faculty in 1986, she has been active as resource speaker in music education and piano pedagogy workshops and as collaborating pianist in concerts locally and abroad. She was Dean of the UP College of Music (2000-2004) and Chair of the Humanities Division of the National Research Council of the Philippines (2005-2009) and was a recipient of the 2010 NRCP achievement award for “having pioneered in ethnomusicological research on Gaddang folk songs of [her native] Nueva Vizcaya and vocal music of the Cordillera and established appropriate methods for understanding the dynamics of local adaptations of songs origination from external sources” (excerpts). Retired from UP academe in 2010, she [became actively] involved in national projects of the Philippine Society for Music Education the UP Center for Gifted Education, the Cauahian na Gaddang, and in advisory positions at the Philippine High School of the Arts and Music Committee and National Commission of Culture and the Arts.
