Upang suriin ang mga gill at hepatopancreas ng mga alimangoโ€”isang organ na sangkot sa pagtunaw ng pagkain at pag-iimbak ng sustansyaโ€”gumamit ng high-throughput sequencing si Gardel Xyza Silvederio mula sa National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology UP Diliman at UP Marine Science Institute ng University of the Philippinesโ€“Diliman College of Science, kasama sina Dr. Ma.

Ang pag-aaral na ito ay pinondohan ng Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST PCAARRD).

Mud crabs are considered non-model species, meaning scientists have limited genomic resources available for studying them compared with well-studied organisms. To study the gills and hepatopancreasโ€”an organ involved in digestion and nutrient storageโ€”of mud crabs, Gardel Xyza Silvederio of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology UP Diliman and UP Marine Science Institute, together with Dr. Ma. Anita Bautista of NIMBB and Angela Camille Aguila-Toral and Dr. Rachel June Ravago-Gotanco of MSI, used high-throughput sequencing.

This bioinformatics pipeline can process huge amounts of genetic information at once, allowing the scientists to identify and study the crabโ€™s genes without relying on a complete reference genome. They used five different assembly tools to piece together the genetic information: Trinity, SOAPdenovo-Trans, IDBA-Trans, rnaSPAdes, and EvidentialGene. Trinity performed best among the tools tested for both the gill and hepatopancreas data. They also found that using several different metrics helps evaluate transcriptome quality. The resulting transcriptomes can help scientists in future genomics research and gene expression analysis on mud crabs. This study also provides a reliable method for studying the genes of non-model species.

This research was funded by the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST PCAARRD).

When Taal Volcano erupted in 2020, it released large amounts of volcanic ash that spread to nearby areas. Because volcanic ash can pose risks to peopleโ€™s health, disrupt transportation, and damage agriculture and infrastructure, it is important to anticipate how ash will disperse during eruptions and where it could potentially fall to ensure safety and minimize damage.

Ken Matthew Oliva, Dr. Reinier Mendoza, Dr. Rhudaina Mohammad, and Dr. Arrianne Crystal Velasco of the UP Diliman Institute of Mathematics and the UP Diliman Natural Sciences Research Institute simulated how ash from Taal Volcano moves through the atmosphere. They estimated the diffusion rate (the rate at which ash spreads) using three approaches. First, they established a baseline through multiple simulations, then used the least squares method to fit the numerical solution to ash concentration profiles. While this worked well with clean data, the method became less accurate when 5% noise was added, highlighting the sensitivity of the inverse estimation process to measurement uncertainty. Finally, they proposed a third method using satellite brightness temperature data, which produced diffusion estimates consistent with the baseline simulations. The resulting diffusion rate can help predict the trajectory and extent of ash dispersion.
