Creative Mind at Work

After the cooperative learning activity, our advanced primary kids were brought back to individual work. This is an opportunity to process what they had learned and demonstrate their own understanding.

As they developed their skills in identifying the main idea and supporting details in a text, we invited them to represent a given paragraph through visual expression. They drew what they understood and then labeled the details represented in their work.

This is where we see an important connection:

Creative expression can precede and enrich language development.

Before children can fully put their thoughts into words, they often need a space to see, imagine, draw, and create. Their scribbles, shapes, symbols, and visual representations become bridges toward more organized language expressions.

When we give children opportunities to translate their creative minds into visual forms, we give them something concrete to talk about, describe, explain, and eventually write about.

Their creativity becomes a pathway to language.

And perhaps this is one of the most beautiful things about learning: sometimes, before a child finds the words, they first find a way to express the idea.

The Beauty of Cooperative Learning

There is something beautiful about seeing our Southwill kids learn with and from one another.

Cooperative learning is more than putting students into groups. It creates opportunities for learners to listen, contribute, encourage, question, create, and grow together.

The beauty can be seen in 5 things:

1. Learning becomes shared.

Instead of asking, “What can I learn?” students also begin to ask, “What can we discover together?”

2. Differences become strengths.

Every learner brings something valuable. One may be good at explaining, another at organizing, another at creating, and another at asking thoughtful questions. Everyone has something to contribute.

3. Communication becomes meaningful.

Students do not simply answer the teacher. They explain their thinking to others, listen to different perspectives, ask questions, and learn to express their ideas clearly.

4. Success becomes collective.

Students discover that helping a classmate succeed does not lessen their own success. **When one grows, the group grows. Learning becomes a shared achievement.

5. Character develops alongside competence.

Cooperation nurtures respect, responsibility, patience, empathy, confidence, leadership, and accountability—qualities that cannot be fully developed through individual worksheets alone.

At its heart, cooperative learning reminds us:

Learning is not only about what I can do by myself, but also about what we can discover, create, and contribute together.

Because sometimes, the most beautiful learning happens when children realize that they don't have to learn alone.

THOSE LITTLE EYES… SO GLUED TO THE SCREEN!

There’s something heartwarming about watching children become completely absorbed in a good story.

Today, our little learners watched FernGully: The Last Rainforest with so much curiosity and excitement. You could see them following the characters, reacting to what was happening, and quietly taking in the story.

For a moment, the classroom became their little window into the rainforest.

And that’s what we love about learning through film at Southwill—when children enjoy the experience, they also listen, notice, think, feel, and learn.

Sometimes, learning begins with being glued to a good story.

🎬🌿 LEARNING THROUGH FILM: FERN GULLY

At Southwill, film viewing is not simply a break from regular lessons. Through the Southwill Integrated Learning Model (SILM), a film becomes a meaningful learning text—one that learners can listen to, observe, analyze, discuss, and respond to.

As part of our Environmental Awareness Month, our learners watched FernGully: The Last Rainforest and completed a short comprehension quiz based on what they saw and heard.

Through this experience, learners were able to:

🎧 Listen for details – identify characters, important events, settings, and key information from the film.

📖 Demonstrate comprehension – answer questions about what happened, who was involved, and why important events occurred.

🔗 Identify cause and effect – explain how human actions such as cutting down trees and polluting the environment can affect forests and living things.

🔍 Analyze the message of the film – identify the environmental problem presented and explain what the story teaches about protecting nature.

🗣️ Express ideas and opinions – discuss what they noticed, what they learned, and what they think people should do to protect the environment.

💭 Make connections – relate the events in the film to environmental situations they may observe in their homes, school, or community.

🌱 Identify responsible actions – name concrete ways they can help care for plants, animals, water, and their surroundings.

❤️ Develop values of stewardship – recognize that caring for the environment involves responsibility, respect, and care for God's creation.

And the learning continues beyond the quiz.

Learners transform their understanding into comic strips, stories, advocacy slogans, posters, poems, essays, and recycling activities—allowing them to communicate what they learned through different forms of creative expression.

This is what makes the learning experience highly integrated.

One film becomes an opportunity to develop listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, communication, creativity, values formation, environmental awareness, and authentic action.

The goal is not simply for children to remember what happened in a movie.

The goal is for them to understand its message, express what they learned, and translate that learning into responsible action. 🌏💚

SEPTEMBER: A MONTH TO CARE FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT

At Southwill, environmental awareness is more than a lesson in a textbook. Through the Southwill Integrated Learning Model (SILM)**, we give our learners opportunities to Explore, Discover, Communicate, Create, Contribute, and Reflect—and what better way to learn about caring for the Earth than through meaningful, fun, and creative experiences?

This month, our learners are becoming young environmental advocates through activities such as:

🎬 Film Viewing – discovering stories that help us understand the beauty of nature and the consequences of environmental destruction.

🎨 Poster Making – turning environmental messages into powerful visual expressions.

💬 Advocacy Slogans – creating short, meaningful messages that inspire people to care for the Earth.

📖 Story Writing – imagining characters, situations, and solutions connected to environmental issues.

🖍️ Comic Strips – telling stories about environmental responsibility through art, dialogue, and creativity.

✍️ Essay Writing – expressing ideas and reflections about our responsibility to the environment.

🌿 Poem Writing – using words, rhythm, and imagination to celebrate nature and express our concern for the Earth.

♻️ Recycling Activities – transforming used materials into something useful and meaningful while discovering that what we consider “waste” can have another purpose.

Through these activities, learners are not simply **learning about the environment. They are learning to **observe, question, communicate, create, collaborate, and take action.**

This is the spirit of SILM learning becomes meaningful when children can connect knowledge to real life and use what they learn to contribute to their community.

🌎 Bcause caring for the Earth begins with awareness—but it grows through action.
