Bayanihan o Katarungan?

Martial Law: When Security comes at Cost

I vividly remember when I was still in Senior High School, Taking Humanities in Social Sciences, when my teacher in Politics and Governance asked me:
"What is Martial Law?"

Without thinking too much, I answered, "Sir, gin enforced na siya to fight the rebels and protect the people"

At that time I thought It was an adequate answer and the whole story only revolves around with the statement that I gave. But as our discussion continued, I realized there was more to the story.

Under Article VII, Section 18 of the 1987 Constitution,
martial law may be declared when there is only invasion or rebellion, and public safety requires. It is meant to address serious threat, not just to give the government unlimited power.

In 1972, former President Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law through Proclamation No.1081. His government said it was vital to fight the rebellion and maintain peace and order. But although there were claims of increased order and security, there was also a darker side.

During the Martial Law Era many Filipinos experienced arbitrary arrest, killings, torture, enforced disappearances, and restrictions of freedom of speech and the press. These human rights violation later on recognised through Republic Act. No. 10368, which provided recognition and reparations to the victims.

Knowing all this made me question my old answer.

Ang martial law bala revolves only about protecting the people?

Maybe the lesson is that not everything martial law was simply good or bad.

History should not be viewed from only one perspective. We need to look at the law, the government's reason, and most importantly, the experiences of the people who lived through it.

A safer country should never mean fewer rights for its people.

Martial Law was an era that stands as a reminder that power must always come with responsibility.

At What Point Can We Call Someone a โ€˜Professionalโ€™?

Weโ€™ve all seen it happen, whether in the comment sections of online forums, on social media, or even within our own school clubs and extracurriculars. A beginner asks an earnest question, shares a creative draft, or makes a minor mistake. Within a few minutes, the critics will circle. But often, the loudest, most merciless voices arenโ€™t anonymous trolls; they are seasoned seniors, leaders, or veterans who hold the title of โ€œexpertโ€.

At what point exactly can we honestly call someone a โ€œprofessionalโ€™?

In a school setting, we are taught that professionalism is about a title, a role, a leadership position, or years of experience. But true professionalism goes far deeper than a paper full of credentials or a badge. It requires character.

Unfortunately, a toxic subculture exists where experienced individuals weaponize their status, tearing down a newbieโ€™s desire to learn purely for cheap laughs, entertainment, and ego validation.

When an upperclassman mocks a freshmanโ€™s naive question, or a veteran club member of high status publicly humiliates someoneโ€™s work for viral clout online, something fundamental has broken. This behavior usually stems from a toxic mix of gatekeeping and insecurity.

Dragging down beginners for entertainment creates an artificial hierarchy. By making someone feel less smaller, the established โ€œprofessionalโ€ momentarily feels bigger. It transforms our learning spaces into arenas where mastery is used as a weapon rather than a tool for mentorship. It is easy to point fingers and laugh, but why does someone had to be picked as their topic of fun just so they can have their stomachs burst out of laughing?

If technical skill or title alone doesnโ€™t make a professional, what does?

At the end of the day, handing someone a diploma, a medal, or a fancy job title doesnโ€™t automatically cure them of middle-school behavior. If your entire identity relies on flexing your expertise just to stomp on someone trying their best, youโ€™re just a mean person.

Itโ€™s time to stop confusing cruelty with high standards. Real professionals donโ€™t need to punch down to feel tall, and they definitely donโ€™t need live audience to laugh at someone elseโ€™s expense.

Perhaps it is because, for a little while, we are allowed to be still while everything around us keeps moving. The bus carries us through familiar streets, past buildings we rarely notice, faces we will never know, and places that disappear before we can hold on to them.

There is something about sitting by a window and watching the world pass that makes our own lives feel like another road outside the glass. We remember the people we have left behind, the choices we have made, the things we still hope to become. Thoughts that were too loud in the morning somehow become quieter between stops.

Maybe we reflect because we are neither here nor there. We are simply in transitโ€”temporarily suspended between where we came from and where we are going.

And perhaps that is why public transportation feels strangely intimate. Among strangers, with nowhere to go but forward, we are given a few quiet minutes to meet ourselves.

The bus stops. People get off. Others get on.

The doors close.

And once again, life moves forward.
Perhaps we do, too.
