The 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀 successfully conducted 𝐏𝐞𝐞𝐫-𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆, an online peer tutoring session for our 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙙-𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙠𝙨.

With their newly crafted research titles as the starting point, our third years worked through their ideas, organized their thoughts, and took their first steps toward building a clearer thesis structure and outline, with the guidance and support of their fellow Mathiniks.

𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗨𝗣𝗢𝗡 𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗡 #𝟯

𝓓𝓸 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓴𝓷𝓸𝔀 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓶𝓪𝓷 𝓫𝓮𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓭 𝓸𝓷𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓶𝓸𝓼𝓽 𝓯𝓪𝓶𝓸𝓾𝓼 𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓸𝓻𝓮𝓶 𝓲𝓷 𝓶𝓪𝓽𝓱?

Meet 𝗣𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘀, an ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician who lived around 570–495 BC. Although many details about his life remain uncertain, he became one of the most influential figures in the early development of mathematics.

Pythagoras traveled to places such as Egypt and Babylon, where he encountered mathematical and astronomical ideas. Later, he settled in southern Italy and established the Pythagorean Society, philosophy, music, and the study of nature. 📚✨

Pythagoras is most famously associated with the 𝗣𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗺, which describes the relationship between the sides of a right triangle:

𝒂² + 𝒃² = 𝒄²

where c is the hypothenuse—the longest side of the triangle.

Pythagoras and his followers helped promote the idea that mathematics could be understood through numbers, patterns, relationships, and logical reasoning.

Their ideas also connected mathematics with music. Pythagoras and his followers explored how musical harmony could be related to numerical ratios, showing that mathematics could be found not only in shapes and numbers but also in sound.

Interestingly, Mathematics was more than calculation to him. For the Pythagoreans, numbers were connected to the structure and order of the world.

‎In Mathematics, there is a word "𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗼𝗹".
‎
‎A 𝓰𝓸𝓸𝓰𝓸𝓵 is the number 𝟏𝟎¹⁰⁰, written as 1 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀. The name is traditionally credited to 𝟵-𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗿𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗮, the nephew of mathematician 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗞𝗮𝘀𝗻𝗲𝗿, who asked him to name this 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿. The term was later popularized by Kasner in his 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟬 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Milton also suggested the name “𝓰𝓸𝓸𝓰𝓸𝓵𝓹𝓵𝓮𝔁” for an 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲, 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿.

Meet 𝗠𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝗯𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗮 𝗮𝗹-𝗞𝗵𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗺𝗶, a Persian mathematician whose work more than 1,000 years ago helped shape the way we solve equations today.

Working in 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗱𝗮𝗱, particularly at the famous 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙞𝙨𝙙𝙤𝙢, al-Khwarizmi made significant contributions to mathematics. One of his most important works was 𝑨𝒍-𝑲𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒃 𝒂𝒍-𝑴𝒖𝒌𝒉𝒕𝒂𝒔𝒂𝒓 𝒇𝒊 𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒃 𝒂𝒍-𝑱𝒂𝒃𝒓 𝒘𝒂𝒍-𝑴𝒖𝒒𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒂, commonly translated as 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴. 📚

The book presented systematic methods for solving linear and quadratic equations. The term “𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚” itself comes from the Arabic word “𝒂𝒍-𝒋𝒂𝒃𝒓,” which appears in the title of his work and refers to the process of restoring or completing parts of an equation.
