Photojournalists from my division were tasked to take some pictures in the merkado.

There I was, wandering in the market. I stood there, a camera in my hand, but a heavy heart to click the shutter.

Each face I saw was not just a story wanting to be told—it was like a wound, silent cries, and hidden behind tired smiles

That moment, I handled them a few coins, thinking it was nothing. But then, their eyes lit up with genuine gratitude, and they smiled as if it were a fortune.

I was stunned. How could this little mean so much? Just then I realized, it’s never about how much you give, but how deeply it means to them.

Bridging the gap through joint forces.

PTA-BOD and Reading Salon of DCCES joined hands in organizing a joint outreach activity: Reading Engagement, A Joint Project of DCCES and Reading Salon that aimed to provide a nurturing reading environment for the children of Brgy.Zone 1.

Laughter echoed as children of Purok Malipayon, Brgy. Zone 1, Digos City joyfully took part in different reading activities during the launching of the project, Aug 4, 2023.

One of the most heartwarming sights was witnessing children eagerly listening to the story read by the PTA President, Carlito P. Laceda, a retired PNP and answering comprehension questions raised by Reading Salon expert Teacher Merla Silva of which a special prize awaits the one with the correct answer. Kagawad Jay Medina, OIC-Brgy Captain of Zone 1 showed his support for the activity as he shared his precious time with the children.

As the day drew to a close, the setting sun painted the radiant smiles on the faces of children whose tummy was filled with sumptuous snacks prepared by PTA Treasurer Chiara Leen Redoble and PTA BOD Gina Tan, sponsored by PTA Vice President Atty. Nikkolo Marco Aurelio.

This collaborative activity was a profound reminder that education does not solely reside within the four walls of a classroom. It goes beyond that, embracing the joint efforts of parents and teachers with one goal; to mould children's minds and hearts, inspiring everyone to keep working together for the improvement of the community.

This remarkable event will transpire in 3 purok chapters of Brgy.Zone 1 namely; Purok Malipayon, Purok Manga, Ravina Compound on August 11, and Purok Star Apple on August 16.

DCCES learners receive grant from DavSur for TLS Improvement

To make true of the promise of prioritizing the education sector, the Digos City Central Elementary School ( DCCES ) learners receive a total of Php 598,000.00 fund for the improvement of the Temporary Learning Spaces ( TLS ) from the Office of the Provincial Governor Yvonne R. Cagas of Davao del Sur today, April 13.

The project has been made a priority after Barangay Kagawad Ian Giron saw the plight of the learners who will be conducting classes in make-shift rooms devoid of an environment conducive for learning with the support of the DCCES PTA Board of Directors.

“ When DCCES teachers called me and ask for my assistance for the improvement of TLS, I witnessed every room and how difficult it was for learners to brave through the very hot weather under these spaces and sometimes battling with the rain during class hours so I brought the matter to Governor Cagas and answered the plea. Today’s turn-over ceremony marks a dedication reflected into action made by our provincial governor”, Giron shared.

The ceremony was attended by Provincial Governor Yvonne R. Cagas, OIC- Schools Division Superintendent of Digos City Dr. Melanie P. Estacio, Division Senior Education Program Specialist, Peter Jason C. Senarillos, Public Schools District Supervisors, Mr. Neil D. Bongcayao and Dr. Ely G. Cataluna, DCCES School Principal, Inda D. Nacua, DCCES PTA President Carlito D. Laceda, PTA BODs, teachers, parents, and learners.

The program began with a ribbon cutting, which officially opened the newly improved temporary learning spaces for the DCCES learners. It was followed by a blessing of the TLS officiated by Rev. Fr. Randy Lingo, PSDP.

The formal turn-over ceremony followed, which signified the transfer of ownership and responsibility of the building from the Province of Davao del Sur to the DCCES community.

“ I truly believe in the importance of education and the government's commitment to provide quality education to all students, regardless of their economic status. We do not know one of you here will become the future governor of Davao del Sur, hence, our continued pursuit in accomplishing the legacy in education of the late Hon. Dodo Ra. Cagas and one of the main concerns of his better half, Congresswoman Mercedes “ Didi” Cagas”, Gov. Cagas said during the event.

Mrs. Inda D. Nacua gratefully shared words of appreciation to the many individuals who have made the project a reality. Barangay Kagawad Giron and the DCCES PTA Board of Directors were also recognized for their hard work and dedication to the project. They were commended for their efforts in advocating for the improvement of the learning facilities and ensuring that the project was successfully implemented.

“The turnover ceremony for the improvement of the temporary learning spaces was a momentous occasion that symbolized the commitment of the government and the community to provide a better learning environment for the DCCES learners. Today, is a celebration of progress and a reminder that, with the collaboration and cooperation of all stakeholders, significant improvements can be achieved”, Nacua stated.

The TLS are currently utilized by the Grade Four and Grade Five learners of DCCES.

Greening the Curriculum

Paperless! This has been the main goal of DepEd Digos City as it launches its Greening Education Project for School Year 2021-2022.
To lessen the volume of paper use in printing the modules, to minimize the carbon footprint brought by printing of learning activity sheets, to provide easy access to learning materials safely to the learners’ home, to save time and money in printing, filing, distributing, and retrieving the modules, and to take good care of the learners and teachers without risking the environment, are some of the objectives of the birth of the Greening Ed Project.
Digos City Central Elementary School gives its full support to the Greening Ed Project of Digos City Division. SSES learners from Grade 1 to 6 can comfortably and safely access, answer, and submit their digital modules online. While learners from Kinder to Grade 6 classes can access their digital modules at the comfort of the tablets issued to them.
A total of 308 tablets were distributed to the learners, 14 tablets from School MOOE, 80 tablets from the City School Division, and 214 tablets from the Special Educational Fund of Local Government Unit of Digos City.
“Dako kayo akong pasalamat nga naapil ang akong anak sa natagaan ug tablet para didto na mag answer sa iyang modules. Dako pud ni ug tabang sa akoa kay dili na ko mag adto sa eskwelahan para magkuha ug maghatud sa modules, ang akong igasto para plete, mapalit na nako ug pagkaon para sa mga bata,” said Lorgena Puri, Grade 5 Jasmine Parent.
Parents and teachers attend orientation on the implementation of the said project conducted by the School Greening Ed Coordinator, Herick Sordilla on August 9, 2021, which gives a favorable feedback and support from the recipients and implementors.
“Lipay kayo ko kay naa na koy tablet na magamit para sa akong pag eskwela, dili na ko maglisod ug answer sa mga modules. Naa na koy oras para makatabang sa trabahoon sa balay kay mas gipadali man ang pag answer sa modules,” said Christian Lalic, Grade 5 Rose learner.
Greening Ed Project reduces teachers’ time on the preparation, distribution, and retrieval of printed modules since everything can be done digitally.
According to Sarna Maung, a Grade 2 SSES teacher, Greening Ed Project is a big help to her because all the Learning Activities Sheets for her class can easily be accessed in the google classroom by her learners, thus keeping her safe from getting close contacts to parents since there will be no more face-to-face distribution and retrieval of modules.
Safe and continuous delivery of education in digital format through Greening Ed Project is one of the responses of DepEd Digos City Division in the Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP).
