𝗤𝗦𝗨, 𝗗𝗧𝗜 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝟭.𝟮-𝗠 𝗯𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗼 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗼

DIFFUN, Quirino (PIA) — A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of the P1.2 million Shared Service Facility (SSF) project for the establishment of the Quirino State University (QSU) FoBambusari Propagation and Training Nursery, a joint initiative of QSU and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) aimed at strengthening the bamboo industry in the province.

The project supports the administration’s agenda under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to promote sustainable development, strengthen local industries, and advance environmentally responsible livelihood and enterprise programs across the country.

DTI Quirino Provincial Director Rowena Mayangat said the project is designed to enhance bamboo propagation capacity, support research and skills training, and expand livelihood opportunities for farmers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and local communities.

She added that the facility will serve both as a production site for quality bamboo planting materials and as a training hub for stakeholders engaged in bamboo-based enterprises.

Mayangat emphasized that the rising demand for bamboo products highlights the need to strengthen the bamboo value chain through a structured propagation and training facility, in support of green industry and sustainable enterprise development in Region 2.

The SSF project, formally launched at the Bambusari Hall within the QSU compound in Diffun, is also expected to support academic and industry needs while contributing to environmental conservation and community-based livelihood programs.

In a video message, DTI Region 2 Assistant Regional Director Atty. Michael B. Paggabao underscored the importance of expanding propagation capacity and strengthening community participation in bamboo production to meet increasing market demand.

QSU President Dr. Hermenegildo F. Samoy Jr. expressed gratitude to DTI for the partnership, highlighting the importance of collaboration in advancing development-oriented projects that benefit both the academic community and local stakeholders.

The bamboo nursery is expected to serve as a key facility for training, research, and enterprise development, further positioning bamboo as a sustainable and viable industry in Quirino and the Cagayan Valley region. (ALM/TCB/PIA-2)

𝐐𝐒𝐔 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

As part of its continuing commitment to knowledge generation, innovation, and the dissemination of practical information to students, researchers, professionals and practitioners, the university formally launched five research-based books on May 20, 2026 held at the University Bambusari Hall, Diffun Campus. The event highlighted the university’s dedication to transforming research outputs into accessible reference materials that can benefit the academic community and also the broader public.

The activity began with Dr. Elizabeth T. Carig, lead author of most of the books launched, shared her journey in book writing. In her talk, Dr. Carig recalled how rewarding transforming years of research and fieldwork into scholarly publications. She also acknowledged and commended the dedication and hard work of each co-author, and recognized their invaluable contributions throughout the entire book development process, from writing, researching, documenting field observations and taking high resolution images, to designing and laying out the final publications. Her message emphasized that producing a research-based book is a collaborative endeavor that requires patience, creativity, and untiring commitment. Through her inspiring message, Dr. Carig encouraged faculty members, students, and aspiring authors to pursue academic writing as a meaningful way to preserve knowledge and contribute to education and society.

Beyond the academic and technical aspects of book writing, Dr. Carig also briefly shared the deeply personal side of her journey. She recalled how her late husband became one of the strongest influences behind her passion for writing and publication, constantly encouraging her to continue documenting research, developing concepts, and transforming ideas into meaningful outputs. According to her, many of the concepts reflected in their works were inspired by conversations and shared visions they once developed together, including plans for the second edition of their first book. Her story added a heartfelt dimension to the activity, reminding the audience that behind every scholarly work are personal experiences, sacrifices, and people who continue to inspire even beyond their lifetime.

The books launched include the following:

𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬: 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 is authored by Dr. Joel G. Carig, with Dr. Elizabeth T. Carig, Dr. Dyanika P. Nolasco, For. Irene D. Dimmangna, For. Liwliwa F. Mamaoag, For. Sophie B. Campollo and For. Devorah Jane B. Buado as co-authors. This book features 50 unique tree species, both native and exotic, found inside Diffun campus. The book expands current tree records and information and serves as a valuable reference for forestry students, educators, and environmental enthusiasts.

𝐒𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐚 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲𝐚: 𝐀 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞-𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 is one of the major outputs of the project “Technology Utilization and Commercialization if Tissue-Cultured Banana” funded by Department of Agriculture through its Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (DA-ACEF) and the Department of Science and Technology – Regional Office 2 (DOST Region 2). This book is authored by Ms. Elizabeth R. Oppuer, Dr. Elizabeth T. Carig, Ms. Maie Krisette J. Sagales and Dr. Rommel G. Peralta. This publication serves as a practical guide on banana tissue culture, including production and management.

𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐣𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. Authored by Dr. Elizabeth T. Carig with For. Jonalyn J. Quinan, For. Gerlyn B. Orpiano, Dr. Joel G. Carig, For. Arnold N. Pugong and Ms. Jesa Jane Sales as co-authors, the book presents the journey, methods, and innovations behind a science-based initiative aimed at revitalizing coffee farming communities in Quirino Province. Rooted in the SMART Coffee Project supported by DOST R02, the book highlights sustainable approaches such as coppicing, rejuvenation, and macropropagation technologies designed to restore aging coffee plantations and improve local livelihoods. The book reflects the power of collaboration among researchers, farmers, government agencies, and partner communities in building resilient and sustainable coffee production systems for the future.

𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭-𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 is a product of the implementation of the project titled “Development of Clonal Propagation Protocol for Native Forest and Fruit-Bearing Trees of Quirino and Adjacent Provinces,” funded by DOST-PCAARRD. The book presents practical and science-based approaches to clonal propagation, agroforestry, and nursery development, drawing from tested methods and field experiences aimed at restoring forest biodiversity, strengthening sustainable livelihoods, and supporting ecological restoration efforts.

Authored by Dr. Elizabeth T. Carig, project proponent and lead author, together with Dr. Edgar V. Benabise, Project Leader, Dr. Joel G. Carig, For. Jonalyn J. Quinan, and For. Irene D. Dimmangna, the book is designed for researchers, foresters, students, nursery operators, and local communities. It serves as a technical reference and an inspiration for future conservation and sustainable development initiatives.

After the presentation of the books, a ceremonial turnover of copies to the University President followed. In his acceptance speech, Dr. Samoy congratulated the authors and acknowledged their years of dedication and service. He stressed that the highest form of knowledge and thinking is not simply remembering or understanding, but the ability to create - to transform knowledge into ideas, innovations, and solutions that can make a difference in society. He further emphasized that when people pour their hearts into their work, they create something truly worth sharing. According to him, this is exactly what the authors were able to accomplish through their books.

As part of the continuous maintenance activities at Bambusari, the PPRDC staff, with the support of BSF students, conducted bamboo pruning. The staff carried out the pruning, while the students assisted in hauling and clearing the cut bamboo branches.

The University in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region II -Quirino, officially forged a partnership to establish the Bambusari Project Nursery through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on March 16, 2026, at Bambusari Hall, Diffun Campus.
The agreement was spearheaded by academic and government leaders, including Dr. Alfonso R. Simon, OIC-President; Dr. Elizabeth T. Carig, Vice President for Academics, Research, and Extension; Dr. Florigold V. Saldaen, Vice President for Administration and Finance; and Ms. Rowena F. Mayangat, OIC- Provincial Director of DTI Quirino.
The ceremonial signing was attended by key officials, faculty members, and students, marking a significant step toward strengthening institutional collaboration for sustainable development.
Dr. Dyanika P. Nolasco, Campus Research Director, presented a comprehensive overview and explained the purpose of the bamboo farm project, emphasizing its significance in promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation. She highlighted that the initiative aims to provide livelihood opportunities for local communities through bamboo propagation, processing, and enterprise development. Furthermore, the project is expected to support climate resilience by utilizing bamboo as a renewable resource, while also serving as a training and research hub for students, farmers, and stakeholders.
In his opening message, Dr. Simon highlighted the growing importance of bamboo as a versatile and sustainable resource. He emphasized its relevance across academic research, extension programs, and economic development. He further noted the increasing commercialization potential of bamboo, citing its high demand and promising role in local and national industries.
Following this, Director Mayangat shared her insights on future initiatives, expressing confidence in the University's capacity to become a leading producer of bamboo products in the region. She also pointed out that this initiative can pave the way for the institution to supply bamboo raw materials to neighboring provinces, which can contribute to regional economic growth.
This partnership represents a meaningful step toward promoting environmental sustainability, strengthening local industries, and empowering the academic community. The Bambusari Project stands as a symbol of innovation, resilience, and green development positioning bamboo as a “green gold” for future generations.
