Born into a poor family with ten siblings, Noel Banggat Sulotan grew up knowing how difficult life could be. His father was a farmer and blacksmith, while his mother stayed at home to care for the family. Despite their hardships, Noel loved going to school and dreamed of finishing his education. However, after completing elementary school, his father could no longer afford to send him to high school and instead asked him to work to help support the family.
At just 13 years old, Noel left home for Davao City to look for work. He took on different jobs from being an all-around helper in a carinderia to working in a grocery store and later in a clinic. Although life was challenging, he never gave up on his dream of studying.
In 2012, a friend encouraged him to enroll in the Alternative Learning System (ALS). Unsure of what ALS was at first, Noel took the opportunity and enrolled. Through the guidance of his ALS teacher and his own determination, he passed the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Test with an average of 89%. ALS became the bridge that allowed him to continue the education he thought he had lost.
His ALS journey opened the door to college, where he earned a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English. Although he faced several failed attempts in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), he refused to quit. Encouraged by a close friend and driven by perseverance, Noel continued preparing until he finally became a Licensed Professional Teacher.
Today, Noel proudly shares that ALS changed the course of his life. From once being a learner who was given a second chance, he now gives back by helping others discover the same opportunity through ALS.
His story reminds us that poverty, age, and life's challenges are never barriers to achieving our dreams.
With determination, the support of others, and the opportunity that ALS provides, success is always within reach.
♥️💚💙

A SECOND CHANCE🌻
Before earning one of the highest academic honors at UP Diliman, Colene Anne R. Santos first had to return to the education she was forced to leave behind.
Colene Anne, a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy graduate, was named among UP Diliman’s candidates for summa cm laude for 2026.
Her story did not begin with a straight path through school. After a difficult childhood forced her to pause her formal education for several years, she found her way back through the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System, which gave her another chance to continue learning outside the traditional classroom.
She later passed the Philippine Educational Placement Test, allowing her to move forward in place of the traditional junior high school curriculum.
At UP Diliman, Colene Anne became active beyond the classroom. She served in UP Kabataang Pilosopo Tasyo and earned several recognitions in the Emmanuel Q. Fernando Philosophy Undergraduate Conference, including awards in Applied Ethics and the Ethics Bowl Team Competition.
Her story is a reminder that education does not always begin, continue, or end in the same way for everyone. For some learners, the road back is longer and more difficult, but it can still lead to places they once thought were beyond reach.
Pagbati, Colene Anne. Isang karangalan ang iyong tagumpay, hindi lamang para sa sarili mong pangarap, kundi para rin sa maraming kabataang patuloy na naghahanap ng daan pabalik sa edukasyon.

Community Spirit Shines as ALS Mintal Kicks Off Brigada Eskwela and Enrollment
The spirit of Bayanihan was alive and well at the Mintal Comprehensive Stand Alone Senior High School (MCSASHS) grounds today, June 6, 2026, as the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Senior High School community successfully launched its Brigada Eskwela and Enrollment Kick-Off.
Under this year’s theme, “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa Para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman,” the day was all about teamwork. Our dedicated community of students, parents, teachers, staff, and even proud alumni pooled their time and resources together. They worked hand-in-hand cleaning the school grounds, organizing classrooms, and bringing in donations to ensure a comfortable learning environment for everyone.
The morning was filled with great energy, starting with inspiring words from Principal II Shirley Elizabeth N. Jacobe and Brigada Eskwela Coordinator Romeo Jr. D. Torres, who both encouraged the learners to keep striving to become the best versions of themselves. The day also proved that ALS learners are not just hardworking, but incredibly talented! The crowd enjoyed an energetic Zumba session led by our teachers and SSLG leaders, followed by a fantastic live band performance showcasing our very own ALS students.
The day-one turnout for enrollment showed immense dedication from the learners, with a total of 87 students officially registering on the first day alone:
• 43 Enrollees for Grade 11
• 44 Enrollees for Grade 12
If you or someone you know missed today's kick-off, don't worry! It is definitely not too late to catch up and invest in your future. At ALS Mintal, we believe that education is for everyone, no matter your background or life circumstances.
The enrollment process will officially continue on June 9th to 11th.
Every single hand that helped today is paving the way for our learners' success. We invite more of our community members to take that brave step, sign up, and reach your dreams with us. Come and enroll next week—we are excited to welcome you to the ALS MCSASHS family!
