US Work and Travel Batch 2017
US Internship Batch 2017

HRI’s tax refund processing has gotten more simple! Visiting the US on a J1 visa is exciting – especially because if you’ve worked in the US and paid tax, you could be entitled to a US tax refund. We get US tax back for thousands of J1 students and Work & Travel participants every year. As US tax laws can be confusing, many people think, ‘Why bother filing a tax return?’ Well, everyone who visited the US on a J1 visa is required by law to file a tax return and it’s important to comply with US tax laws. The amount you get back, however, depends on your individual circumstances and on factors such as how much you’ve earned and how long you have been working. Tax season for 2017 will not start until late January of 2018 and you have a deadline of April 14, 2018 to file your tax refunds.

Towards the end of January 2018, your previous Host Company will print out a W-2 form; which is a full summary of all your earnings and taxes withheld. Keep in mind that if you had two or more jobs you will need to collect W-2 forms from each Host Companies. You will either receive your W-2 Form on your email, home address or at HRI-Manila Office, depending on your Host Company. Also, your Host Company may have given you an orientation about this or emailed you about how to receive your W2 Form.

After receiving your W-2 form, you have several options to have it filed. Keep in mind it will cost a fee to file your taxes and for those new to the tax process it can take up to 14-20 weeks for you to receive your refund back. HRI has teamed up with TaxBack.com to prepare your US Federal and State tax returns. As a J1 visa holder, you are obliged to file a tax return to get your US tax back. This will ensure that you have a clear tax record with the US tax authorities, comply any taxes that you should've paid. TaxBack.com will assist and compute all your taxes and determine how much taxes you’ve overpaid, which will be refunded to you.

It is important to use HRI’s website in filling for your tax returns to enjoy the discounted tax processing. Submit a Tax Service Request at www.hrimanila.com/tax.
If you don't have your W2-From, please contact your previous employer to get a copy.
If you have multiple jobs during the program, you may also request for a tax refund. Just upload a separate form for each W2 form.

Simply answer the form and wait for our Tax Service Provider to email/call you. TaxBack.com may call your number and it may not register on your phone properly. Normally, TaxBack.com representatives may sound like Bulgarian, Romanian, etc. You may request for their name for you to note.

When in doubt, you can always visit HRI Manila Office to file for your tax or verify the caller. Don't forget to inform all your friends about this!
