Established in 2024, the University of Mindanao Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory (UMBEL) has rapidly grown into a emerging hub for synthetic biology and biotechnology research.

Patricia has officially marched to receive her BS in Biology (Major in Ecology) from the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼, graduating with the highest academic distinction: 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗺 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲.

Even before crossing the graduation stage, Pat had already brought her top-tier academic training directly to 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗦𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧 as our 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁. Our Laboratory Head, Dr. Angelo Bañares, recently wrapped up his DOST-PCIEERD Medium-Term Balik Scientist engagement at the University of Mindanao (UM) with an inspiring exit report titled, “𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘣𝘪𝘰 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘎𝘎𝘎 𝘊𝘰𝘥𝘦 – 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴, 𝘎𝘳𝘪𝘵, 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦"

During his tenure, Dr. Bañares brought invaluable international expertise to UM and his co-host, Pampanga State Agricultural University, to expand local capabilities in synthetic biology and biotechnology.

His "GGGG Code" perfectly captures the journey of building a strong regional research ecosystem. He emphasized that while Genes provide the scientific foundation, it takes Grit to sustain the tough pursuit of research, Grants to fund the work, and Good People to make the scientific community truly thrive.

While his formal Balik Scientist engagement has come to a close, this is just the beginning. The knowledge shared, capacities strengthened, and collaborative networks established by Dr. Bañares have laid a powerful foundation for the future of synthetic biology in Mindanao.

The visiting delegation was graced by DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. and Undersecretary for R&D Dr. Leah J. Buendia, together with DOST-PCIEERD officials: Deputy Executive Director and Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Executive Director, Engr. Niñaliza H. Escorial; Chief of the Human Resources and Institution Development Division, Dr. Ruby Raterta; Chief of the Industrial Technology Development Division, Ms. Mary Grace G. Buenavides, and Assistant Regional Director DOST Davao Region Dr. Nathan Ray Alim, along with other DOST officials and staff.

The visit, facilitated by the 𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐋 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨 𝐁𝐚ñ𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬, provided the DOST officials with a firsthand look at the laboratory’s facilities, ongoing research initiatives, and the team’s work in biomolecular engineering, synthetic biology, and sustainable biotechnology.

More than a tour, the visit was an opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss ongoing innovations, and strengthen the connection between research, technology, and real-world applications. It highlighted how collaborative scientific efforts can turn ideas developed in the laboratory into solutions for pressing environmental, agricultural, and community challenges.

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗟’𝘀 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 '𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗻𝗮𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝗽': 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗚. 𝗣𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 🧪✨

Youngest on the team, but certainly not one to be underestimated. As UMBEL’s 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁, Pat brings a calm, focused energy to the work behind 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗦𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧. Whether she’s getting hands-on in the lab or working through the details of an experiment, she approaches each task with patience, curiosity, and a determination to get things right.

Pat holds a BS in Biology, major in Ecology, from the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼. Her background gives her a strong foundation in understanding biological systems, which she now brings into UMBEL’s work in 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 and microbial bioproduction.

Attentive to the details, willing to learn, and always ready to take on the next challenge. She may be the youngest in the room, but she’s already making her mark
