It’s heartwarming to read the little biographies of good people scattered throughout Paul’s letters. Sometimes Paul’s deep doctrinal discussions make him seem distant and intellectual, but these personal notes reveal his tender, loving side.

The story of Epaphroditus in this chapter is particularly touching.

Paul appreciated him greatly. Epaphroditus had come as a messenger from the Philippian church, bringing gifts to Paul. He had also fallen seriously ill in Rome, but God mercifully restored him. Now, Epaphroditus was returning home, carrying this letter from Paul.

This mention of Epaphroditus reminds us that somewhere, even if not in books, every act of kindness is recorded.

God’s plans never fail. Paul was destined to go to Rome, even though the obstacles seemed overwhelming. Even nature itself seemed to conspire against him reaching his destination.

Yet, despite all the hindrances, the way was made clear, and Paul finally entered the “Eternal City.”

Prison might seem like a poor place for a missionary, but Paul’s time in prison did not limit his influence. In fact, being under Roman protection kept him safe from persecution. This was God’s way of providing for him.

We often think that periods of being “shut in” are wasted time. A superficial view might suggest that Paul’s two years in prison were lost years, but perhaps no other two years of his life produced as much fruit. From his prison, he continued to preach to visitors, and he wrote four letters that have been blessing the world for nearly two thousand years.

Pilate’s position was a tragic one. He probably felt honored to be made governor of Judea, but the responsibility of that role led to his downfall.

When he was summoned early that April morning, he didn’t realize it would be his day of judgment. He had no idea he was about to make a decision that would forever mark him with shame. It would have been far better for him to have never been governor than to make the terrible mistake he made that day.

Instead of asking, “What is right?”—the only question a judge should consider—Pilate asked, “What will benefit me?” That’s where he lost everything.

Now, he is known throughout history as the judge who knowingly sent an innocent man to be crucified. Some have imagined Pilate constantly washing his hands, but no matter how much he scrubs, the stain will never come off.

Jesus knows the best way His followers can serve Him. He sent the apostles out to teach and heal, but allowed John the Baptist to be captured, imprisoned, and ultimately killed.

We should be willing to serve our Master in whatever way He leads us. He may call us to a long life of active service, or He may ask us to honor Him by enduring persecution and hardship.

John's life seemed like a failure. He preached for only a few months, yet he was a great preacher, with hundreds coming to hear him. His murder seemed like a tragic waste, an irreparable loss for the kingdom of God.

But John's work was complete—he had done all he was sent to do. There was no reason for him to live any longer. When someone dies young, we often mourn their passing as untimely, but in God's timing, there are no mistakes. “Every man is immortal until his work is done.”

Jesus sees into people’s hearts and knows everything about them. He saw faith in the men who brought their friend to be healed. Then He saw into the man’s life, recognizing that his greatest need wasn’t healing, but forgiveness of sins.

Jesus also knew the secret thoughts of the scribes. They reasoned in their hearts, and Jesus knew their thoughts. He also saw in the publican the potential to be an apostle, even though others would have overlooked him.

Knowing that Jesus sees everything should both restrain and encourage us. We can’t hide anything from Him, so we should be careful in how we live.

But it should also inspire us, because He knows when we try, even when we fail. He knows when we’re sincere, even when we make mistakes. He knew Peter loved Him, even though Peter had denied Him.
