On we remember the nationalist fighter and teacher Teresa Magbanua
Teresa Magbanua was a teacher in Pototan, Iloilo who followed her two brothers and her uncle in joining the Katipunan in liberating the Philippines from colonial Spain. Magbanua defied stereotypes as she showed her skill in horse riding while leading Katipuneros in successful battles, earning her the name "Nay Isa' and the Visayan Joan of Arc.
She later led the resistance against the American troops until 1900 as she was given the rank of 'generala'.
During World War II, she gave financial and logistic support to Filipino guerillas who fought the Japanese imperial army.
She retired with her family in Pagadian until her death in 1947.
Magbanua's heroism is rarely mentioned in Philippine and women history.

DepEd sets flexible Matatag class schedules
Following the clamor of public school teachers, the Department of Education has set flexible class schedules for the implementation of the new Matatag curriculum.
The latest DepEd memorandum order 12 released on September 18, schools now have three options in implementing Matatag schedules based on the schools’ capacities and conditions.
Option A will retain the set 45-minutes per subject in learning areas.
Option B will have learning areas set in 50, 55, or 60 minutes. Four subjects (English, Math, Science, GMRC/Values Ed) will be taught fives time a week. Four subjects (Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE); Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH); Araling Panlipunan (AP), and Filipino will be taught four times a week.
Option C provides more flexible schedules for schools if the first two options are not applicable to their situation, provided that learning time is at least 5 hours and 30 minutes a day.
These adjustments are a result of dialogues between DepEd officials with the Alliance of Concerned Teachers and teachers. Teachers point out that they are overworked under the new Matatag curriculum, where they handled eight subjects a day. This has also taken its toll on students who extend more class hours a day.
The new memorandum reverts the workload of teachers back to the manageable five + 1 subject per day.
ACT said while they are thankful for DepEd for heeding the needs of teachers, they continue to call for support of teachers’ welfare and benefits under this new curriculum, while calling for a thorough review of the necessity of the new Matatag curriculum.
The Matatag curriculum was launched this school year under former DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte, which streamlines seven subjects into five key areas. It is piloted this school year in Kindergarten 1, Grade 1, Grade 4 and Grade 7.

The Educators' Forum for Development (EFD) is pleased to announce that the Assumption College of Davao officially nominates our very own Agustin "Don" Pagusara to the Order of National Artist for Literature. EFD worked closely with the Assumption College of Davao in completing the portfolio through the technical team headed by Palanca awardee, Ferdinand Balino.
The ACD and EFD recognize the decades of work in the cultural movement of Don Pagusara that led to the people's artist campaign towards the submission of Don's body of works today to the NCCA. Don's peers in the literature and cultural workers communities (including Davao Writers' Guild) took time to provide insightful testimonials on the relevance of works, competence and commitment of Don to pursue social change and development.
The Order of National Artists aims to recognize Filipino artists who have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the country. Filipino artistic accomplishment at its highest level and to promote creative expression as significant to the development of a national cultural identity.
