The recent earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao on June 8, 2026, affected several areas, with General Santos being among those significantly impacted. One of those affected is our colleague from the Quality Assurance Office, 𝗠𝗿. 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝘇 𝗥𝗲𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗕. 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀.

As a result of the earthquake, their home has been deemed unsafe for occupancy, leaving the family to cope with the challenges of recovery. In light of this situation, we humbly seek your support and kindness through any form of financial assistance or donation that you may be able to extend.

The University of the Philippines Mindanao joined the UP System Quality Assurance Conference 2026 held on June 8-9, 2026, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

A 30-member delegation from the university, led by Chancellor Lyre Anni E. Murao, represented the university. The delegation included Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Maria Stella R. Salazar, Vice Chancellor for Administration Leo Manuel B. Estaña, QAO Director Ritchie Mae T. Gamot, deans, department chairs, program coordinators, quality assurance officers, and external quality reviewers from various academic units.

The conference was organized by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs with the theme, “Quality as Duty, Excellence as Legacy: Forging the Future of UP as the National University.” It gathered leaders and quality assurance professionals from across the UP System to discuss current developments and best practices in higher education quality assurance.

Participants took part in plenary sessions, workshops, panel discussions, and collaborative learning activities. Key topics included quality assurance frameworks, artificial intelligence in higher education, leadership and governance, and strategies for continuous improvement.

The conference also provided opportunities for sharing experiences and learning from experts and peers across the UP System. These exchanges helped identify ways to further strengthen quality assurance practices in each constituent university.

UP Mindanao’s participation highlights its commitment to quality teaching, research, creative work, and public service, in line with the UP System’s goal of sustained excellence as the National University.

On May 8, 2026, the University of the Philippines Mindanao reached another milestone with the successful completion of the Internal Audit for its Administrative Offices, reinforcing the University’s commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement. A total of seventeen (17) administrative offices participated in the three-day audit activity, demonstrating their dedication to upholding the standards of the Quality Management System (QMS).

The Internal Audit commenced on May 6, 2026, and concluded on May 8, 2026, in compliance with the ISO 9001:2015 QMS standards. The audit process aimed to evaluate office operations and assess the effectiveness of the implemented procedures, while identifying opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and support continuous improvement within the University.

During the closing program, the Chief of the Human Resource and Development Office, Lynda Buenaobra, emphasized the importance of internal audits in strengthening organizational performance and improving institutional processes. Furthermore, the administration expressed its appreciation to all Internal Auditors and participating offices for their valuable contributions to the success of the activity.

Looking ahead, Batch 2 of the Internal Audit is scheduled for August 2026 and will focus on the academic, research, and extension offices. The upcoming audit is expected to further strengthen the University’s efforts in delivering excellent instruction, research, and community extension services.

The ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) Internal Audit for Batch 1 - Administrative Offices officially began on May 6, 2026. This initial activity brought together top management, internal auditors, process owners, and representatives from various offices to formally launch the audit process and reaffirm the University's commitment to continuous improvement and quality assurance.

The morning auditing sessions, following the opening program, focused on the Office of the Chancellor, the Public Relations Office, and the Gender and Development Office. In the afternoon, internal auditors continued their review by examining the documented procedures of the Accounting Office, Budget Office, Information Technology Office, Human Resource Development Office, and the Office of the University Registrar.

Overall, the first day of the Internal Audit served to verify the university's system, confirming that administrative processes are in place to support the daily operations of each office. More significantly, it allowed internal auditors to assess the prevalence of service effectiveness, accountability, and improvements within UP Mindanao.

As the internal audit moves forward, the University is encouraged to maintain its support for quality assurance initiatives and reinforce a culture of excellence in public service.

LOOK | UP Mindanao continues to nurture transformative education through the AMUMA Faculty Conference 2026 🌱

Featuring an important lecture by Dr. Shepherd Urenje on “Navigating Global Complexity Through Regenerative Thinking,” the conference brought together faculty in meaningful dialogue and practice. Mini-workshops led by Mr. Juan Roy and Ms. Jacqueline Fe Retes-Luy guided participants from complexity to regeneration, while sessions on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) deepened perspectives on sustainability in higher education.

Faculty sharing from A/Prof. Ligaya R. Leal and A/Prof. Cinmayii G. Manliguez showcased innovative approaches in integrating ESD, AI, and emerging technologies into teaching. These reflections were thoughtfully woven together in the synthesis by CHSS Dean Prof. Jhoanna Lyn B. Cruz, highlighting key insights on navigating the academic landscape through regenerative thinking and the responsible use of AI in education.
