LOOK | The Ugnayan ng Pahinungod Mindanao, together with the Department of Human Kinetics-UP Mindanao, conducted a Sports Coaching Development for teacher-coaches last September 18-20, 2026 at Ummat National High School, Simunul Island, Tawi-Tawi.

The training was led by faculty volunteers from the UP Mindanao Department of Human Kinetics: Asst. Prof. Catherine Joy Lariosa, Prof. Raisalam Angoy, Asst. Prof. Jessa Gubalani, Asst. Prof. Annaliza Castro, and Ms. Camille Joyce Olebang.

The three-day event, attended by 60 elementary and secondary teachers from 18 different schools around Tawi-Tawi, is part of the continuing effort to nurture grassroots athletes from Mindanao.

LOOK | UP Mindanao Computer Science students developed “Narinig Mo Ba?” (NMB), an indie game set in a Filipino neighborhood and centered on a sari-sari store and the everyday life of the community.

NMB was created in just four days for a national game jam organized by the UPLB Computer Science Society. It won Best World Building among 30 entries and later reached audiences beyond the Philippines. This highlights the untapped potential of Mindanao’s student game developers and creative community.

Four days was all it took for a group of Computer Science students from the University of the Philippines Mindanao to make a game they thought they would simply leave behind.

‎They called it Narinig Mo Ba? (NMB). In English, it translates as “Have You Heard It”?

‎Created as their first experience in game development, NMB was made for an online game jam organized by the UPLB Computer Science Society, where it won Best World Building among 30 entries from aspiring game developers across the Philippines.

LOOK | An article by a/Prof. Farah Aimee S. Virador-Cagayan of the Department of Humanities, UP Mindanao, exploring decolonizing religion and sexuality, is published in the September 2026 issue of Philippine Studies: Historical & Ethnographic Viewpoints, The Limits of Liberalism.

Titled “Decolonizing Religion and Sexuality: Asserting Pluriversality in Rosario Cruz-Lucero’s Feast and Famine: Stories of Negros,” the article explores indigenous knowledge, women’s roles, and cultural resistance.

LOOK | The Institution Development Division (IDD) and Marine Resources Research Division (MRRD) of DOST-PCAARRD conducted the Midterm Review of the project, “Fostering Integrated Sustainable Habitats for Ecosystem Security in Davao Gulf, Mindanao, Southern Philippines (FISHES Mindanao) at UP Mindanao, led by A/Prof. Leo Manuel B. Estaña, Project Leader, on September 29, 2026.

FISHES Mindanao is a project under the Undergraduate Research and Education Assistantship for Technology (uGREAT) Program. The uGREAT Program of DOST-PCAARRD is a capacity-building initiative that supports undergraduate students in conducting thesis-based research aligned with national priorities in Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources (AANR). Through the program, students receive financial and technical support, including a monthly allowance during their thesis semester.

LOOK | In celebration of World Maritime Day and the Philippines’ Maritime Archipelagic Awareness Month (MANAMo), DOST-PCAARRD invites the public to the webinar “Science-Informed Marine Governance: UN BBNJ Agreement and the Case of Apo Reef Natural Park” on September 30, 2026, at 10:00 AM via Facebook Live.

The webinar will discuss the BBNJ Agreement, or UN High Seas Treaty, its significance to the Philippines, and how scientific research can support marine conservation and policy development, with Apo Reef Natural Park as a case study.

The activity also serves as a kick-off enabling activity for the country’s implementation of the BBNJ Agreement, which entered into force in January 2026.

LOOK | UP Mindanao welcomed Japanese curators and researchers from the Museum of Nature and Human Activities, Hyogo (MNHA)

The visiting researchers were Dr. Noriaki Murakami, Dr. Kota Sakagami, and Dr. Takeshi Yamasaki. They engaged in discussions with UP Mindanao Chancellor Lyre Anni E. Murao, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Maria Stella R. Salazar, DBSES Chair Dr. Marion John Michael M. Achondo and MS Biology Coordinator Mae A. Responte to explore opportunities for strengthening academic and research collaboration between UP Mindanao and MNHA through the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation (NEF).

The visiting researchers also conducted reconnaissance field surveys in reserved areas within the UP Mindanao campus and at the Marahan Botanical Garden and Wildlife Sanctuary (MBGWS), with the assistance from MS Biology students and Mr. Ricardo Obenza, Jr., the owner of MBGWS.

The visit highlights the importance of collaboration among researchers, private stakeholders and institutions in advancing biodiversity research, documentation, and conservation.

LOOK | The Agri-Aqua Value Chain Laboratory (AAVC Lab), in collaboration with the UP Mindanao Land Reservation Management Office (LRMO), invites everyone to AVCDE1: Stakeholders’ Forum, themed “Cultivating Common Ground: Co-Creating Solutions with Stakeholders for Sustainable Communities in the UP Mindanao Land Reservation.”

The forum brings together farmers, government agencies, LGUs, academe, private institutions, development partners, and other stakeholders to share experiences, discuss challenges and opportunities, and explore ways forward for sustainable initiatives in the UP Mindanao Land Reservation.

LRMO will also present the accomplishments and challenges of its CHED-funded research project on linking cacao farmers to sustainable markets for better income and well-being in Marilog, Davao City, followed by a stakeholder exchange on collaboration and sustaining the project’s gains.

The Stakeholders’ Forum will bring together farmers, government agencies, local government units, academe, private institutions, development partners, and other stakeholders to share experiences, discuss challenges and opportunities, and explore ways to sustain and build on initiatives in the UP Mindanao Land Reservation.

LOOK | ICIAH 2026 Explores Emerging Health Trends and Challenges

Researchers, health experts, students, and community partners convened online on September 8–9 for the International Conference for Interdisciplinary Approaches to Health (ICIAH) 2026, organized by the UP Mindanao Mindanao Center for Disease Watch and Analytics (DiWA Center), and UP Mindanao Office of Research, with support from the UP Office of International Linkages.

With the theme “The NOW & the NEXT for Health: Navigating a World in FLUX,” the conference highlighted the need for interdisciplinary, data-driven, and adaptive approaches to emerging public health challenges involving climate change, infectious diseases, artificial intelligence, and health systems.

Key discussions explored climate-sensitive disease risks, AI-driven disease surveillance, risk assessment, One Health, dengue control, and precision public health. Dr. Rachel Lowe emphasized decision-support tools for strengthening resilience to climate-related infectious disease risks, while Dr. Swapnil Mishra highlighted the potential of AI for forecasting and surveillance, stressing the importance of accuracy, interpretability, latency, and cost.

The conference also featured the launch of the DiWA App, which provides disease trend summaries, early signal detection, spatiotemporal maps, situational reports, and a chatbot to improve access to disease information.

Speakers emphasized that technology and data must be paired with human judgment, local context, and continuous refinement to support effective public health decisions.

The conference also recognized outstanding research through the Health Research Awards. Assoc. Prof. Cinmayii G. Manliguez and Joseph Angelo Y. Mangalus tied as Most Outstanding Paper Presentations.

The DiWA Center also announced MIDSEA-IWOMB 2027, scheduled for June 6–11, 2027, at Discovery Samal, Davao del Norte.

The conference showcased the importance of bringing diverse disciplines, evidence, and innovation together to build more responsive and resilient approaches to health challenges in a rapidly changing world.

LOOK | UP System's Research, Creative Work, and Innovation Committee (RCWIC) meets at UPLB in September 2026

RCWIC reviews and develops policies that strengthen research, creative work, and innovation across the UP System. It also facilitates information sharing, coordination among constituent universities, and discussions on concerns raised by faculty, REPs, and students.

Representing UP Mindanao at the meeting was the Office of Research Director Dr. Marilou Montiflor.
