IN PHOTOS | As part of the country's ongoing initiative to advance research capacity, the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao successfully conducted a ๐Ÿ”-๐ฐ๐ž๐ž๐ค ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฆ from June 10 to July 22, 2026!

A big congratulations to our 8 outstanding undergraduate and graduate interns representing universities across Mindanao: MSU โ€“ Main Campus, MSU โ€“ Iligan Institute of Technology, MSU โ€“ General Santos, MSU โ€“ Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography, MSU at Naawan, Central Mindanao University and the University of the Philippines Mindanao

Throughout the 6-week program, all interns enhanced core molecular biology and bioinformatics skillsโ€”ranging from Genomic DNA Extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction ( PCR), and gel electrophoresis to primer design and Linux command-line workflows. They then applied these fundamentals across three specialized research tracks.

The Microbial Genomics Track focused on studying microorganisms through laboratory and genome analysis. The Genetic Studies of Selected Plants and Animals Track provided hands-on laboratory experience in DNA analysis through long-range PCR, followed by the use of bioinformatics tools to explore genetic data and better understand plant and animal species.

Meanwhile, the Eukaryotic and Microbial Biodiversity Analysis Track examined the diversity of microorganisms and other living organisms through DNA-based analyses and computational approaches.

During the culmination program, the interns presented their final track projects, highlighting the remarkable growth, skills, and progress they achieved throughout the 6-week internship. Special recognition was given to the following outstanding interns for their exceptional achievements:

Every sample processed and every genome sequenced brought us closer to understanding COVID-19.

By sequencing nearly 4,500 COVID-19 samples, we generated genomic evidence that supported public health decisions, strengthened disease surveillance, and helped protect the communities we serve.
