Many people wonder why September 8 is observed as the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
LITURGICAL CALCULATION
-In the Christian tradition, this date is set exactly nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, paralleling the nine months from the Annunciation on March 25 to the birth of Jesus on December 25, and reflecting the sacred period of a mother carrying her child as noted in Scripture (2 Maccabees 7:27). This feast was already widely celebrated long before the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was defined in 1854, with roots in early writings such as the Protoevangelium of James, ancient liturgical practices in Jerusalem, processions instituted by Pope St. Sergius I, and homilies by St. Andrew of Crete, eventually finding a firm place in the Roman calendar by the seventh century.
WHY CATHOLIC CELEBRATE MARY'S BIRTHDAY?
-Pope St. Paul VI taught in Marialis Cultus that celebrating Mary’s birth is closely tied to the mystery of the Incarnation and the hope of salvation, while the Catechism presents her life as prepared throughout the Old Covenant for her unique role as Mother of the Savior. Those who honor this day often do so through prayer, Mass, processions, the Rosary, and visits to Marian shrines, giving thanks for her existence and her Fiat—her complete “yes” to God—through which she became the doorway for Christ and a mother who points all people toward her Son. Today we can pause to thank God for the gift of Mary, honor her as the Theotokos, and ask that she continue to offer maternal guidance and lead all who seek her intercession closer to Jesus Christ.
Viva Maria! Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us. Pro Deo et Ecclesia ✝️
