In every success story, there is meaning behind the journey. There are rough patches, highs and lows, and all the tribulations someone may hide. However, basking in the high of success can make a person forget the meaning behind every struggle and leap they have taken.

Analynn Ong, a chief medical technologist at Memorial Hospital and Manor in the United States (U.S.), is not that kind of person. In fact, she remembers every step of her journey at San Pedro College (SPC), carrying each lesson to heart across the world and international borders.

Analynn’s time at SPC remains one of the most meaningful chapters of her life. It shaped not only her career but also her character and perspective. As she served in the clinical laboratory, she traced her confidence and competence to the teachers who strengthened her professional foundation.

β€œMa’am Jasmen, Ma’am Chalee, Ma’am Joanne, Sir Geromil – Thank you! You all were not just educators β€” you were masters of your field whose standards matched global excellence,” she expressed.

To Analynn, their demanding standards and ability to translate complex theories into precise, practical laboratory work equipped her for the realities of her profession. Through their mentorship, Analynn developed the knowledge and refined techniques that enabled her to thrive in the challenging clinical laboratories of the U.S.

Yet, Analynn’s SPC years were not defined by grueling laboratory work alone. They were filled with fond memories spent with friends β€” forming bonds that would last a lifetime. She fondly remembered the sleepless nights before exams and the laughter shared in between despite their struggles.

It did not matter what they were doing or where they were headed β€” whether studying together in the library, preparing for laboratory work or simply unwinding after a tiring day, those moments became her source of strength and joy.

β€œEven now, those friendships continue to inspire and support me in both my personal and professional life,” she said.

Of course, the journey to success was shaped not only by the people who mattered but also by the priceless experiences that molded her growth as a professional. The internship period, her yearlong opportunity to experience the realities of clinical laboratories, was one of the most unforgettable parts of her college life.

β€œIt was both exciting and fulfilling β€” a time when everything we had learned in the classroom finally came to life in real clinical settings. The environment was dynamic, sometimes challenging, but always rewarding.”

From performing successful procedures and working alongside professionals to contributing to patient care, Analynn brought the lessons she learned from the four corners of her classroom into the real world. Those experiences β€” no matter how big or small β€” strengthened her confidence and passion for the field.

The difficult examinations, demanding schedules and moments of self-doubt did not fade from her memory. Instead, they became the experiences that solidified her resilience. Alongside them were campus events, small victories and the quiet pride of mastering complex laboratory techniques.

β€œSan Pedro College was more than just an institution; it was a place that nurtured my dreams and prepared me for the realities of my profession,” Analynn shared.

Even years later, despite the distance between herself and the place that shaped her future, Analynn took with her the expertise, friendships and values SPC had given her. All of these served as proof that every meaningful journey begins with a foundation strong enough to take one far from home without ever forgetting where it began.

A hospital room, a newsroom and a courtroom seldom belong to the same story. Yet for Novie Jay Onor, each became a place where service found its voice. Though the uniforms changed over the years, one purpose endured: to serve with compassion, conviction and integrity.

When Onor arrived at San Pedro College (SPC) as a scholarship student from Magpet, Cotabato, he carried dreams that stretched far beyond hospital walls. Nursing was not the future he had first imagined; he once envisioned himself standing before judges instead of patients. Yet practicality led him to pursue a degree in nursing β€” a decision he would later recognize not as a detour but as the very foundation that prepared him for every role life would later ask him to embrace.

The lessons that shaped him were not confined to lecture halls. Reviewers towered higher than his confidence. Return demonstrations demanded precision long before precision became instinct. Then came his first hospital duty: the first pulse beneath his fingertips, the first patient entrusted to his care, the first quiet realization that no written examination could fully prepare someone for the weight of another person's life. It was there that the institution's guiding principle β€” Love Serves β€” ceased to be a motto and became a responsibility.

Yet SPC formed more than a future nurse. Beyond the bedside, the SPC Debating Club gave him the courage to speak, while The Rock student publication, where he would later serve as editor-in-chief, taught him that words carry responsibility. Leadership, he discovered, was never about holding a title β€” it was about accountability, listening with intention and standing firm when truth demanded a voice. Those lessons would shape him just as profoundly as his clinical rotations, preparing him not only to care for lives, but also to advocate for them.

Years after earning his nursing degree, the dream he once thought he had set aside quietly found its way back to him. At present, Onor is both a registered nurse and the founder and managing attorney of ONOR Immigration Law PLLC, where he advocates for individuals and families across borders. Rather than leaving one calling behind for another, he carried the same discipline, empathy and commitment to service into a different profession.

"San Pedro College did not simply give me a degree. It gave me the confidence to wear whatever uniform life asks of me," he reflected. Perhaps that is what his journey reveals most clearly. A hospital room, a newsroom and a courtroom β€” each asked something different of him, yet all called him to the same purpose. Through every room he entered and every uniform he wore, the institution's guiding principle remained constant: Love Serves. And though the roles changed, service endured.

Some journeys toward a life of service begin with a single decision, one that seems ordinary at first but later shapes a person’s purpose. For Lara Ng, that moment came in 2009 when she stepped into San Pedro College (SPC) as a freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, following a course recommended by a family friend. From that moment on, she began building a future defined by compassion and a steadfast commitment to serving others.

Receiving a half academic scholarship was both a privilege and a responsibility. Determined to maintain it throughout her college years, Ng embraced every challenge with perseverance. Beyond the pursuit of academic excellence, she found a community that nurtured friendships, introduced her to mentors who sparked her interest in teaching, and immersed her in the institution’s core values.

Although the journey was not without its difficulties, every challenge strengthened her character. Maintaining her scholarship demanded discipline, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. More importantly, it deepened her faith and reminded her that success is never achieved alone.

β€œMy time at SPC remains one of my most cherished chapters in life. It was there that I formed lasting friendships, learned from brilliant professors who inspired my own interest in teaching, and embraced the institution’s core values… These principles continue to guide me long after my graduation,” she shared.

Graduating magna cm laude was a milestone she credits not only to hard work but also to God’s grace and to everyone who believed in her. That achievement later opened the door to a full academic scholarship in medical school, allowing her to continue pursuing the calling she had begun at SPC.

The years that followed brought new opportunities and greater responsibilities through medical school, internship, residency, and fellowship training. Today, as an internist and infectious diseases specialist, Ng continues to practice the same values that first took root during her college years.

Looking back, Ng considers SPC one of the most cherished chapters of her life. It was where she discovered that true success is not measured solely by academic honors or professional titles, but by the values that endure long after graduation. Through every patient she serves and every life she touches, she continues to reflect the spirit of β€œLove Serves", a legacy that began within the halls of SPC and continues to inspire her journey today.

Oftentimes, leadership is likened to glory. The roots of Philippine history told passages of many past datus, others of national heroes who led the fight against oppressors, and a lineage of presidents whose voices shaped the course of Philippine history. Not all of them began with fanfare and destiny, and not all leaders are seen in the spotlight or engraved in stone. Some leaders, like Iris Jule Escalicas, led a life of humility and a heart to service. And, it was in the halls of San Pedro College (SPC) that she learned the true meaning of genuine leadership.

For Iris, SPC was one of the most formative and meaningful seasons of her life. In her second year, Iris served as the Arts and Sciences representative, where she learned the weight of her position. β€œ[It] opened my eyes to the responsibility of representing not just a department, but the voices and concerns of fellow students,” she shared. That responsibility came with sacrifices and strife, one that demanded her whole time and attention behind closed doors. It meant spending long nights planning activities with her co-officers, learning to find balance between academics and council responsibilities, and listening with empathy whenever their opinions differed.

Iris’ steady growth in leadership flourished further in her junior year, newly elected as the Internal Vice President. Like every step to growth, the new position posed a deeper challenge. β€œI was entrusted with overseeing internal operations, working side by side with our president, ensuring coordination among committees, and helping sustain unity within the council,” Iris said. β€œIt was not always easy, but those challenges strengthened my resilience, decision-making skills, and confidence.” In the demanding, often unseen work of student governance, she found the steady courage that would later define her professional life.

Today, as an HR Director, Iris recognizes how deeply SPC continues to shape her. It trained her to value responsibility, preparation, and accountability. β€œThe culture of excellence pushed me to go beyond what was required, while the formation grounded in faith and service taught me to lead with empathy and purpose,” she remarked. In high-pressure moments, team collaborations, and principled decisions, she often returns to the lessons first learned within SPC’s halls.

β€œ[SPC] did not just educate me academically,” she reflected. β€œIt formed my character, strengthened my work ethic, and gave me the confidence to pursue leadership roles with integrity.” For her, the lasting legacy SPC was seen in the mentors who believed in her, the friendships she gained, and the values she continued to carry wherever the tides of time took her. It was the identity and pride of being an SPCian – one that sought purpose in the quiet but profound drive to serve – that will forever guide Iris to thrive in her current career. And it was those years she spent as a student leader, growing and leading with purpose, that created the accomplished woman who continues to serve with the same empathetic heart; embodying the advocacy SPC stood for against the test of time.

Beyond the four walls of the classroom, she was once a student who found comfort in silence. Reserved, observant, and driven by a quiet determination, Girlie Lucenara believed that success was measured by academic excellence alone.
She entered San Pedro College (SPC) with one goal in mind: to achieve remarkable grades. What she did not expect was that the institution would shape not only her intellect, but also her character, faith, and leadership.

While many see silence as a sign of weakness, Girlie transformed it into one of her greatest strengths. Rather than seeking recognition, she allowed her actions, discipline, and commitment to speak for themselves.

β€œI believed success was measured by grades and recognition. What I did not realize then was that SPC was shaping me for something far greater than academic distinction β€” it was forming my character, strengthening my faith, and preparing me for leadership,” she recalled.

As the years passed, Girlie realized that growth extended beyond the classroom. Determined to become the best version of herself, she dived deep into student organizations and extracurricular activities, including SALIGAN. These experiences challenged her to step beyond her comfort zone, work alongside others, and embrace responsibilities that would later define her leadership.

β€œI discovered that true leadership is not about being the loudest voice, but about being committed to service, guided by integrity, and dedicated to a shared purpose,” she said.

Her journey continued beyond the campus and into the wards of San Pedro Hospital of Davao City, Inc., where her clinical exposure became one of the most defining moments of her formation. Under the guidance of her clinical instructors, she learned to combine knowledge with compassion, discipline with empathy, and confidence with humility. Each patient encounter deepened her understanding that nursing is more than a profession β€” it is a vocation that beseeches for capability, bravery, and genuine care for others.

β€œI learned that nursing is not merely a profession but a calling: one that demands competence, empathy, and courage,” she reflected.

Those experiences strengthened not only her clinical judgment but also her confidence as a future healthcare professional. More importantly, they reinforced the values that SPC had instilled in her from the very beginning.

"The lessons I learned at SPC truly made me the person I am today. I was molded by the values inculcated in me as an SPCian β€” excellence, faith, humility, compassion, and service," she shared.

For Girlie, those values were never confined to lectures, they were reflected in the guidance of her mentors, the example set by the administrators, and the culture of service that surrounded the institution. Through these experiences, she realized that education was not solely about developing knowledge, but also about forming integrity within her personality.

β€œSPC nurtured not only my intellect but also my moral and spiritual foundation. It taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth and that leadership begins with character,” she added.

Today, Girlie continues to embody those principles as the Officer-in-Charge Assistant Director of Nursing Service at San Pedro Hospital. The leadership she practices is rooted in the lessons she learned as an SPCian β€” she leads by listening, mentoring young nurses, empowering her colleagues, and remaining accountable in every responsibility entrusted to her. Her journey reflects how quiet determination, strengthened by faith and service, can inspire meaningful leadership. Looking back, Girlie remains grateful to the institution that transformed her life.

β€œI am forever grateful to San Pedro College for shaping my professional competence and personal integrity. I will always remain a proud SPCian β€” committed to excellence, grounded in faith, and dedicated to compassionate service.”

From a quiet student who once measured success through academic achievements alone, Girlie Lucenara has become a compassionate nurse, a respected leader, and a living testament to the transformative education of San Pedro College. Her story proves that silence is not the absence of strength β€” and when guided by purpose, faith, and service, it becomes the quiet force that inspires others.

No measure of status, wealth, or circumstance can diminish the value of a human life. Yet dignity in living depends not only on the will to survive, but also on access to healthcare that recognizes the person behind the illness and responds with compassion.

Working at Davao Occidental General Hospital (DOGH) in Lacaron, Malita, Rizalito Golingay came to understand that caring for patients means more than responding to their immediate medical needs.

Established as a province in 2013, Davao Occidental was among the few provinces without a primary Department of Health-retained tertiary government hospital before DOGH opened, leaving many residents with limited access to essential healthcare services. With the hospital serving a predominantly indigent and low-income population, Golingay learned to look beyond the illness β€” to understand the circumstances of each patient and recognize the person behind the need for care.

Looking back on his journey, Golingay recognized that his commitment to serving marginalized and Indigenous communities had taken root during his years at San Pedro College (SPC), where he pursued a degree in Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology (BSMT).

In an environment where serving others was consistently emphasized, Golingay participated in various outreach programs that brought him closer to underserved communities. He was often encouraged to take part in community initiatives, visit less fortunate communities, and extend help where it was needed. Among these experiences, one that remained particularly vivid to him was helping organize health missions.

β€œThese early experiences taught me that true healing involves not only just addressing the physical ailments but also understanding the broader context of people's lives, their challenges, struggles, and resilience of their spirit,” he reflected.

Yet passion and dedication alone cannot sustain a career built on service. To care for others effectively, one must also be prepared to meet the demands of the work β€” mentally, emotionally, and professionally. This understanding deepened as he entered medical school, where the values he had cultivated at SPC continued to shape his choices, guide his education, and influence the professional path he pursued.

For Golingay, his years at SPC shaped his understanding of service beyond the confines of clinical care, fostering a more holistic perspective that continues to fuel his dedication to the communities he serves today. As he puts it, β€œMy experiences at SPC led me to understand the unique needs of marginalized and Indigenous communities.”

Continuing his duty at DOGH, Golingay carries the lessons he learned β€” serving not only to heal but also to listen and understand. In every life he touches, he finds a reminder of what healthcare should be: compassion that sees the person beyond the illness and honors the dignity every life holds.
