The Language Students' Society proudly congratulates our very own AB English Language alumna and Hiyas sa Kaliwatan 2026, ๐๐ฌ. ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐. ๐๐ซ๐๐๐จ, for winning the ๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐ during the Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2026 Coronation Night, held at the USeP Gymnasium and Cultural Center on August 13, 2026.
Proudly representing the Hiyas sa Bangsa Kagan with confidence, Ms. Jamaica graced the audience with full smiles and enthusiasm during the Cultural Presentation segment on August 9, 2026, as she introduced the life within the Kagan culture through traditional music and dance. Her incredible performance offered everyone a glimpse into their cultural heritage by letting everyone hear the sounds of the Kagan instruments, such as the suring (a traditional flute) and percussion instruments such as the agung, kulintang, gimba, and gandang, along with a twist of her personal pieces.
Truly, music is more than just entertainment-it encompasses our cultural identity through languages, music, dances, and chants. This principle led her to become one of the Top 3 finalists and eventually took the award.

Dr. Ekaterina A. Baklanova is an Associate Professor in Philippine Studies at the Institute of Asian and African Studies of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia, where she has taught Filipino language and literature for more than 20 years. As a researcher, she has authored around 40 publications on Tagalog/Filipino language contact and morphology, as well as papers on Philippine literature and culture. She also participated in various Philippine and International conferences such as ICAL, APLL, ACAS, Philippine Linguistic Congress, Taboan, LESEWA, 1st Eurasian Linguistic Congress, etc., and in October 2024, she organized an International Philippine Studies Conference, the first ever at the Moscow State University.
The Tagalog language that we speak today is influenced by multiple foreign languages throughout history, similar to how English became a melting pot language of its own. In her upcoming talk titled "๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ: ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ ", Dr. Baklanova will unveil the remarkable linguistic innovations within the distinct, creative identity of the Tagalog language by examining its intense contact with multiple Asian and European languages, especially Spanish. She will also discuss how language contact manifests through the "Hispanization" of English, the "Taglish" phenomenon, and many other outcomes that enriched the language's lexicon and created semantic shifts.

Congratulations to our very own AB English Language alumna and Hiyas sa Bangsa Kagan, ๐๐ฌ. ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ข๐๐ ๐. ๐๐ซ๐๐๐จ, for being named among the ๐๐จ๐ฉ ๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ during the Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2026 Cultural Presentation, held on August 9, 2026, at SM City Davao.
In a celebration that brought to life the rich heritage of Davao Cityโs 11 ethnolinguistic communities, Ms. Prado took the stage and let the music of the Kagan people tell its story.
Her presentation went beyond performance. She highlighted how Kagan music is part of everyday life, from celebration and communication to courtship. Through the ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ , a Kagan bamboo flute used to express what the heart cannot say; the ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ง๐ , a distinctive two-headed drum of the Kagan; and the ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐๐ง๐ , through which she performed the ๐๐ข๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ค๐จ, traditionally played by women during courtship, she brought the sounds and stories of Kagan life to the stage.
With every note and every beat, Ms. Prado showed that Kagan music carries stories, expresses emotions, and preserves a peopleโs way of life.
Joining her in the Top 3 Best Cultural Presentations were Marisol Barani of the Sama-Bajau community and Christine Faith Pandia Gawilan of the Matigsalug community, whose performances likewise celebrated the richness of Davaoโs diverse cultural heritage.
As part of the next stage of the competition, the Top 3 will perform again on August 13, 2026, during the coronation night at the USeP Gymnasium, where the Best in Cultural Performance award will also be announced.
Ms. Prado's achievement is a testament to her dedication to representing Kagan culture with pride and purpose. More than a placement, this is a moment where Kagan music was given a stage, and through her, a new audience was given the chance to listen.
Padayun, Jamaica! May you continue to carry the music, stories, and heritage of your people with pride as you take the stage once again.

Dr. Andi Asrifan is a lecturer and researcher in Applied Linguistics and English Language Education at Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia. His academic expertise lies in academic writing, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and the integration of artificial intelligence in language learning and scholarly communication. Moreover, as a researcher, he has an active publication record in international peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus and Sinta, promoting his academic work on bilingual education, AI-assisted writing, and digital literacy.
Throughout history, language education has been shaped by dominant languages, cultures, and ideologies; as a result, indigenous knowledge systems and multilingual identities are often marginalized. Dr. Asrifan discusses how English language education can become more inclusive, context-aware, and socially transformative by using examples from various English language teaching practices in higher education and in multilingual contexts across Southeast Asia. He highlights the need for educators to confront systemic disparities and empower communities through inclusivity and cultural sensitivity, as they shape every learnerโs experience, social awareness, and critical thinking skills.

The international conference brought together scholars from across Southeast Asia and beyond to examine the historical and contemporary impacts of climate change in the region. Amid discussions on environmental policies, scientific innovations, and technological responses, Mr. Reginio's presentation offered a perspective rooted in the lived realities of Mindanao, where climate, culture, conflict, and community remain deeply intertwined.
Conducted in collaboration with ๐๐๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ข ๐๐๐ฏ๐ข๐, the paper centered on the experiences of 48 Indigenous and Bangsamoro women from selected communities across Mindanao. Rather than portraying them as passive recipients of disaster response, the paper highlighted their roles as knowledge holders, first responders, caregivers, and custodians of cultural memory. Their narratives showed how they interpret changes in nature, from the movement of birds and the behavior of animals to shifts in weather patterns, not simply as observations, but as locally grounded early warning systems shaped and refined through generations of experience.
"It's not superstition," Reginio explained. "It's observation refined over centuries. They don't separate climate from culture. For them, it's all connected." The statement reflects the heart of the paper.
The paper also emphasized that resilience in Mindanao is shaped not only by preparedness but by the strength of community itself. Through food sharing, caregiving, ritual practices, storytelling, and the enduring spirit of ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
-๐๐๐๐๐
(bayanihan), Indigenous and Bangsamoro women continue to strengthen relationships and preserve cultural knowledge long after disasters have passed. Recovery, for them, is not simply the rebuilding of homes or livelihoods but the restoration of communities and the transmission of wisdom to future generations.
๐๐ซ. ๐๐๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐จ'๐ฌ participation, carrying the communities' narratives to an international audience, was more than presenting a research paperโit was an ๐๐๐๐๐๐, a responsibility to faithfully represent the voices, histories, and knowledge entrusted to the research team by the women who generously shared their lived experiences. Their stories transformed an academic presentation into a conversation that resonated beyond conference halls, reminding scholars that behind every climate model are communities whose wisdom has long guided them through uncertainty.
The AB English Language Program proudly celebrates this achievement as another testament to its commitment to scholarship that is locally grounded and globally engaged. By bringing the ๐๐๐๐๐๐ (voices) of Mindanao to an international academic platform, this reflects the program's continuing pursuit of research that advances knowledge while remaining deeply connected to the communities it serves.
As conversations on climate resilience continue to evolve, this reminds us that some of the world's most enduring lessons are preserved not only in scientific models but also in communities whose wisdom has been nurtured across generations. The knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Bangsamoro women should not be sidelined, diluted, or replaced by external models that disregard their context. Instead, it must be meaningfully incorporated into climate strategies in ways that respect and sustain their practices, rather than forcing them to abandon or alter the very traditions that have enabled them to endure.
For long before climate resilience became a global agenda, it already lived in the quiet wisdom of Mindanao's Indigenous and Bangsamoro women. May their ๐๐๐๐๐๐ (voices) continue to resonate beyond conference halls and policy tables, reminding the world that the future of resilience is strongest when it listens to the voices that have guided communities through every storm. Their ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ (stories) are more than research findings, they are the ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ (heartbeat) of a resilient ๐๐๐๐๐๐ (nation).
