The Salida Dabawenyo Film Forum on May 2 (Thursday) 2 pm to 4 pm at the SM City Annex Event Center. Featuring a discussion on the current state of filmmaking and the audio/visual creative sector in Davao with regional filmmakers, film artists and film programmers.

Dabawenyo full-length films to be screened at Lunsod Lunsad

DAVAO CITY—Five films from Dabawenyo filmmakers consisting of two full-length films and three short films will be screened at the Salida Dabawenyo event of the Lunsod Lunsad initiative.

Lunsod Lunsad, conducted by the City Government of Davao and the Department of Trade and Industry puts in place several projects, programs and activities across different creative and arts sectors in a bid to foster creative entrepreneurship, capacity building, skills development, job creative within the local communities.

It is part of the programs undertaken by the DTI to enrich the country’s creative sector in line with the mandate of the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act (PCIDA).

Lunsod Lunsad’s theme “Creative Spaces in Public Places” will have different activities in public places such as parks, covered courts, government facilities and other highly accessible public places. Salida Dabawenyo will have their screenings at the Davao Cinematheque, a government-owned small movie theater located near the People’s Park.

On April 23 at 3:00 p.m. the 2012 full-length film Tambara will be shown alongside the short film “One Minute” by Franky Arrocena.

“Tambara” helmed by Orvil Bantayan and based from the Palanca award-winning short story by Macario Chiu tells the story of a school teacher whose modern way of thinking clashes with the healing practices of a Bagobo shaman. The film was funded under a grant from the Film Development Council of the Philippines as part of the First National Film Festival (Sineng Pambansa) in 2012. It was shot in Calinan district.

Another full-length film “Sonata Maria” by Bagane Fiola will be screened on April 24 at 2:30 p.m. also at the Davao Cinematheque. Also screened on the afternoon of April 24 will be the short films “Tong Adlaw Nga Nag-snow sa Pilipinas” by Joshua Medroso and “Dragon sa Capangunuran” by Adrian Lo.

“Sonata Maria” is a psychological drama and part experimental film detailing the lives of two former bandmates who reconnected after years of separation. Shot in downtown Davao City, the film won the Best First Feature in the 2014 Young Critic Circle Awards.

“Tong Adlaw Nga Nag-snow sa Pinas” won the Best Film prize in the in the 6th Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino Sine Kabataan. While the historical drama “Ang Dragon sa Capangunuran” won several awards at the 20th Mindanao Film Festival.

A film forum will be held on May 2 at SM City Davao Annex Event Center which tackles the history of the Davao film industry and its current state, the event will be attended by several filmmakers, film programmers and educators. (PIA/RG Alama)

The short film “Desilya” helmed by Cagayan de Oro filmmaker Toni Cañete won the Best Film award in the recently held 21st Mindanao Film Festival in Tagum City.

One of the country’s longest running regional film festivals, this year’s Mindanao Film Festival ran from December 6 to 9 in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. It featured more than 40 short films from across the country.
