The problem of Philippine education has something to do with making education equitable, which means that the issue is a question of access to the best schools in the country. There are many gaps in terms of resources and research. Politics also exists among academics. Such results in a toxic working environment. Some people behave like a “big fish in a small pond”. According to the late Dr. Romulo Bautista, the negative traits of Filipinos are often prevalent in the academe.
What about the teaching of philosophy? Recently, I talked to the presidents of the biggest philosophical associations in the country. I proposed a Code of Professional Ethics for philosophy teachers too. I argued that every person who works in the university or for the good of philosophy in the country deserves all the respect and support. It makes no sense to undermine what people do just because of ideological differences. Hopefully, that puts one’s house in order.
