Magallanes Elementary Athletes Fuel Davao Centralβs Strong Showing at Unit 1 Meet 2026
DAVAO CITY β Young athletes from Magallanes Elementary School are making their school and district proud as they deliver impressive performances for Davao Central Unit 1 in the ongoing Unit 1 Athletic Meet 2026, held from September 7 to 9.
Their victories in taekwondo, dancesport, volleyball, athletics, arnis, table tennis, and badminton have added to Davao Centralβs strong showing in the competition. Based on the partial medal tally as of September 8 at 9:15 p.m., Davao Central leads with 58 gold, 34 silver, and 21 bronze medals, for a total of 113 medals.
Among Magallanes Elementaryβs standout performers are the boysβ taekwondo team, which won silver in Category 1 and the championship in Category 2 . The girlsβ taekwondo team also captured the Category 1 championship, guided by Coaches Janet Sawan Namoc and Luzviminda Narciso Paga .
The dancesport team produced one of the schoolβs notable performances, bringing home 11 gold medals and one silver medal in the Latin and Modern Standard events. Coaches Jocelyn Jocelyn Mendez Villarreiz , Engiela Gecali , and Josiah Nonan guided the athletes through the competition.
In volleyball, the girlsβ team emerged as champions under coach Yorw Mes , while the boysβ team, coached by Manuel Grumo Vasay III , finished third. The boys athletics team also emerged as champion under coach Victor Macaldo .
Magallanes athletes are likewise advancing toward the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) in other events. The boysβ and girlsβ arnis teams, coached by spouses Lee Ezel Bernardo Pancho and Ed Soberano , continue their campaign, while the boysβ table tennis team, under coach Ser Dan , pushes forward. The boysβ and girlsβ doubles badminton teams also earned championship titles under coaches Rosalina Caballero and Leslay Revalliv .
Behind every performance is a community working together to support the young athletes. School Principal Vi-Cherry Ultiano Ledesma and PSDS Marilyn Marcelo Marilyn Marcelo continue to provide encouragement and support to the athletes and their coaches as they represent Magallanes Elementary and Davao Central Unit 1.
The athletes also draw strength from their parents, whose presence, encouragement, and sacrifices help them prepare for every competition. From training sessions to game days, parental support remains an important part of the young athletesβ journey.
The Unit 1 Athletic Meet, hosted by the Buhangin East District, features sporting events held in different school venues, with Cabantian Elementary School serving as the opening venue.
During the meet, PSDS Chairman Joan B. Galarion, PhD-reminded the young athletes that success is not measured by medals alone. She encouraged them to live by the values represented by SPORTS: S-trive for Excellence P-ractice Discipline O-vercome Challenges R-espect Everyone T-eamwork S-erve as an Inspiration
Galarion also shared the message from 1 Corinthians 9:24, urging the athletes to give their best in the race they have chosen.

For Magallanes Elementary School, the medals represent more than victories. They are a reflection of the athletesβ determination, the coachesβ commitment, the support of school leaders, and the unwavering encouragement of parentsβall working together as one school, one team, and one proud Davao Central Unit 1.
