June 24 update: PGWP eligibility

In 2024, the Canadian government introduced a new rule for international students in non-degree programs (this means Certificate or Diploma).

To be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), these students must complete a program from specific fields of study.

This rule applies to students who submitted a study permit application on or after November 1, 2024. This means that in order to be eligible for PGWP upon graduation, students must meet all general PGWP eligibility requirements, as well as the field of study requirements.

❗️New changes effective June 25, 2025:
📌 119 new fields of study were added, including programs in health care, education, trades, and social services
📌 178 fields of study were removed; these are no longer linked to jobs in long-term shortage
📌 Now, 920 fields of study are eligible for a PGWP.

📌 For a study permit before November 1, 2024: No field of study requirement.
📌 For a study permit between November 1, 2024 and June 24, 2025: Your program must have been on the PGWP-approved list at the time of application, even if it’s been removed since.
📌 For a study permit or PGWP after June 25, 2025: Your program must be currently PGWP-eligible.
