The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the two colleges that evolved out of the first undergraduate unit of UP in Mindanao, the College of Arts and Sciences. Its initial undergraduate offerings were BA English (Creative Writing) and BA Social Science (Behavioral Science). Currently, CHSS has four undergraduate offerings, namely BS Anthropology, BA Communication Arts, BA English (Creative Writing), and BS Architecture.

IN PHOTOS | The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) successfully concluded its ISO 9001:2015 Internal Audit through the collective efforts and commitment of the Department Chairs, Program Coordinators, CHSS Staff, College Secretary, and Dean in collaboration with the Internal Auditors.

The Internal Audit serves as an important mechanism for evaluating the College's compliance with the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, and strengthening the delivery of quality academic and administrative services.

The first official meeting between the CHSS Student Council and the Office of the Dean for AY 2026โ€“2027 provided a venue to discuss student concerns and upcoming College activities.

CHSS looks forward to working closely with the Student Council in advancing initiatives that promote student welfare, engagement, and a vibrant academic community.

On July 29, 2026, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Student Council (CHSSSC) had its first official meeting with the Office of the Dean for Academic Year 2026โ€“2027.

The meeting served as a venue for both parties to introduce themselves, establish their expectations, and strengthen coordination between the Council and the College administration.

Among the matters discussed were equipment procurement, opportunities and scholarships for students, various student concerns, and the preparation of the calendar of activities. Regular meetings with the Office of the Dean, town halls, CHSS Week, and Hampang were also planned.

Through this meeting, the CHSSSC reaffirmed its commitment to actively representing the interests of the students and strengthening coordination toward a more consultative, inclusive, and student-centered College.

LOOK l CHSS Regular Faculty Meeting

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) held its College Regular Faculty Meeting on 15 June 2026 at the CHSS Mini Theater, UP Mindanao.

The meeting was led by Dean Prof. Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz, PhD, together with College Secretary Asst. Prof. Edward G. Estrera, who also serves as OIC of the Department of Social Sciences, Asst. Prof. Nory Loyd N. Pernes, OIC of the Department of Architecture, and Assoc. Prof. Jezreel M. Abarca, PhD, Chair of the Department of Human Kinetics, along with CHSS faculty members and staff.

The gathering served as a venue for discussing important academic, administrative, and personnel matters concerning the College. Among the key agenda discussed was the endorsement of candidates for graduation, marking an important step in recognizing students who have successfully completed their academic requirements.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences warmly congratulates Associate Professor John B. Bengan on his appointment as UP Artist II under the UP Arts Productivity System (APS), as approved by the University of the Philippines Board of Regents during its 1409th Meeting on 27 May 2026.

This distinguished recognition honors his outstanding achievements in the arts, sustained creative excellence, and significant contributions to Philippine literature and culture. Through his work, he continues to enrich the country's literary landscape and uphold the Universityโ€™s ideals of honor, excellence, and service.

IN PHOTOS l CHSS RECOGNITION CEREMONY 2026

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) successfully held its Recognition Ceremony on March 24, 2026 at the UP Mindanao Atrium, honoring the University and College Scholars for their academic excellence, dedication, and perseverance.

The event was highlighted by the presence of Atty. Julius Voltaire Villanueva, BA Communication Arts (2013) alumnus, who served as the guest speaker. In his message, he shared his journey as a former UP Mindanao student and his experiences beyond the University, offering reflections on growth, purpose, and resilience.
His inspiring words encouraged the scholars to embrace both achievements and setbacks as part of their journey, and to continue striving not only for personal success but also for meaningful contributions to society.
