October 21, 2025 - In the wake of the doublet earthquake that struck Davao City on October 10, 2025, the City Social Services and Development Office (CSWDO) took immediate action to mend the unseen wounds left by fear and trauma. Through a debriefing session, teachers from Vicenta C. Nograles National High School gathered to learn how to extend Psychological First Aid (PFA) to learners affected by the recent disaster.
The event opened with heartfelt words from the school Principal Dr. Marites B. Chan, who reminded everyone that being human means being vulnerable in times of crisis. โEverybody will participate in the activity in a sense that we are all humans,โ she said. โWe have the tendencies to panic during calamities.โ Her message set the tone for a day of reflection, empathy, and readiness to care for others while also caring for oneself.
During the session, Ms. Anabelle โButchoyโ Tesoro Lugo, Focal Person of the Emergency Welfare Program of CSWDO, emphasized that every disaster carries a deeper purpose. โThere is a purpose why those things happened,โ she shared. โWe are blessed you called. It shows how conscious and concerned you are to your children.โ Lugo also emphasized that PFA begins with self-awareness, asking, โAsk yourself; Am I prepared physically, mentally, emotionally?โ Lugo explained that earthquakes, unlike other calamities, strike without warningโโEarthquake ang pinakakawatan, kay walay sinyales.โ
The debriefing guided participants through real-life questions through break-out sessions: What was your first reaction after the earthquake? How do fears linger even days after the event? These reflections highlighted how crucial presence of mind and safety awareness are in the aftermath of disasters.
In the afternoon session, the focus shifted to empowerment. Facilitators reminded participants that anyone can perform Psychological First Aidโit is not limited to professionals. The key, they said, is to Prepare, Look, Listen, and Linkโa four-step process in supporting others emotionally and mentally after distressing events. Safety, both for the responder and the affected individuals, remained a central message throughout. For the teachers in attendance, the experience was both enlightening and comforting. Ms. Noemi Grace De Leon, one of the participants, shared how timely and relevant the activity was:
โDako siya ug benefit because PFA is not just for students but for teachers too. We are also thinking about our families aside from our students. Maka-benefit ang teachers because every now and then naga-earthquake paman gud. It helps us ease our emotional state like anxiety from the recent earthquake last October 10.โ
Beyond technical lessons, the debriefing highlighted a greater truthโthat learning is easy, but honing a childโs holistic well-being is more challenging. The CSWDOโs initiative served as a reminder that education does not stop at academics; it extends to nurturing resilience, empathy, and mental healthโespecially in the face of natureโs unpredictability. The activity ended with the singing of the song, โDiyos ng Pag-ibigโ to remind us that amidst calamities God is in full control.
In moments when the earth trembles and fears rise, it is the steady hands and compassionate hearts of teachers and responders that help communities stand firm again.
