WISER BioCon Lab

Every third Friday of May, we observe Endangered Species Day, and the WISER BioCon Lab joins in this meaningful celebration. It serves as a reminder that the world’s most vulnerable wildlife needs our protection now more than ever.

One of these is the giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus), a fruit bat endemic to the Philippines and one of the largest bats in the world. It is currently endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, and the destruction of its forest roosting sites.

Beyond being a remarkable species, it plays a vital role in our ecosystems as a key seed disperser and forest regenerator, helping maintain the health and biodiversity of our tropical forests.

Every species matters. Every action counts. 🌿🦇

About the Lecture: This talk examines urgent biodiversity challenges in the Philippines, with particular focus on Mindanao. As landscapes are transformed by agriculture, urbanization, infrastructure development, resource extraction, and climate pressures, human-wildlife interactions are becoming more frequent and complex. In Mindanao, these changes affect endemic and threatened species that also sustain local and Indigenous communities. The discussion highlights how conservation must respond to habitat loss, shifting species behavior, and ecosystem degradation, while recognizing the value of community-based approaches, Indigenous knowledge, and collaborative governance.

PUBLICATION ALERT 📣

A new study explores the tree diversity of Mount Kampalili, a Key Biodiversity Area in the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor. A total of 101 tree species were recorded, including 23 Philippine endemics and 26 threatened taxa. Findings reveal high diversity in both lower and upper montane forests, with clear differences in species composition driven by elevational gradients. While some species occur across elevations, others are restricted, highlighting the importance of both forest zones in conserving biodiversity.
