What would you say if you were given a question and only 2 minutes to answer?

That’s exactly what Tackling Table Topics is about. Davao Noontime Toastmasters Club is holding this session to help members build the confidence and capability to speak clearly, organize their thoughts, and respond effectively even without much time to prepare. It’s a chance to practice, learn from each other, and become more comfortable thinking on your feet.

The session will be facilitated by Rene Lizada, DTM, on September 25, 2026, from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City. More than just answering impromptu questions, the goal is to develop practical speaking skills that members can bring into their everyday conversations, meetings, and professional settings.

Learning doesn’t have to feel serious all the time. It can be playful, nostalgic, and a whole lot of fun.

This afternoon, we went “Once Upon A Childhood,” and our members certainly understood the assignment! From children’s attire and beloved childhood characters to the toys we once loved, the room felt like a collective rewind of the years gone by. 🧸🎀🪀

Our Table Topics took us on a little trip down memory lane, giving us the chance to revisit the little things that shaped us. Yet, amid all the laughter, costumes, and nostalgia, we remained focused on what brings us together: learning, practicing, and growing.

That’s what a well-planned meeting can do—every activity has a purpose, every element contributes to the experience, and learning happens almost naturally.

Thank you to our officers who conceptualized this wonderful meeting. Your creativity and preparation turned an ordinary afternoon into an experience worth remembering.

Somewhere between the laughter and the learning, we remembered that the child we once were still has something to teach the person we are today. ❤️

When did you last do something simply because it was fun?

Before deadlines, responsibilities, and grown-up expectations, there was a time when a little imagination could turn an ordinary afternoon into an adventure.

This Friday, let’s revisit that version of ourselves.

DAVAO NOONTIME TOASTMASTERS CLUB invites you to “Once Upon a Childhood…” — an afternoon of stories, laughter, play, and perhaps a little nostalgia.

Come dressed as the child you once were and bring the stories that made you who you are today.

First-Timers Who KISSed! 😘

No, not that kind of kiss. 😂 We’re talking about keeping it short and simple.

There is an art to giving a good report: know what to listen for, know what matters, and know when to stop. 😄

And that was what made this trio stand out.

In Toastmasters, TAG stands for Timer, Ah-Counter, and Grammarian—three roles that work independently but support the evaluation and improvement side of the meeting.

While everyone else is busy speaking, they are quietly doing their own jobs behind the scenes:

⏱️ The Timer keeps track of whether we stay within our allotted time.

👂 The Ah-Counter listens for those ahs, ums, and repeated words that sometimes sneak into our speeches.

📖 The Grammarian pays attention to how we use language—from the Word of the Day and memorable phrases to areas where we can still improve.

Different assignments. Different things to listen for. But together, their reports add another layer of feedback to the meeting.

And that was where our three first-timers caught us by surprise during our meeting last Friday.

Our Timer gave us the timing picture we needed without turning her report into a roll call. ⏱️

Our Ah-Counter listened closely, caught the repeated words and verbal habits, and delivered her findings clearly and directly. 👂

And our Grammarian? He may have been hesitant to take on the role at first, but once he stepped up to the lectern, he gave us a report with a story, a purpose, and the right details—from the Word of the Day and memorable phrases to the language points that could be improved. 📖

The best part? This was their first time in these roles. Two had even been hesitant to take them on.

Yet when the reports came, so did the surprise: clear, concise, and straight to the point. No unnecessary detours—just the information we needed and, in the Grammarian's case, a story that made us listen. 😉

To our three first-time TAG role-takers, Toasmasters Bridge, Lyre, and Angelo, thank you for proving that you don't need a long report to make a strong one. Sometimes, less really does say more. 👏

There are many things our VP Education will gladly accept.

A complete program? Yes.
Organized details? Yes.
High-quality ex*****on? Absolutely.
Real opportunities for growth? Always.

But being called "Nanay" by a security guard?🤨 That apparently needs its own meeting.😅

Jokes aside, our VP takes her role seriously, and it shows in every program she puts together. She brings persistence, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence to the work. She doesn't aim to just fill two hours of meeting time. She builds programs that are complete, organized, and worth every member's time.

For her, a well-run program isn't the goal. Member progress is.

That standard is a big part of why quality and excellence define Davao Noontime Toastmasters today.

Thank you, Distinguished Toastmaster Nem Ledda for keeping that standard high every single time, and for pushing every member of this club forward.

We see the work. We feel the difference.

Punctuality is the unspoken first impression. 🙌

If you ever want to know who sets the standard in our club, just look at who arrives first. Our Club President, Distinguished Toastmaster Luzviminda Ilagan, is consistently the earliest person in the room, leading yesterday's early birds by example.

A structured agenda only works when the leaders behind it value every single minute.

When club leadership models preparation and respect for everyone's schedule, the whole club rises to meet that standard.

Kudos to our President Distinguished Toastmaster Luzviminda Ilagan, and the early risers, Nazaire, Angelo Medalla, Michelle Quilala, and Rosanna Teruel, for commanding the clock yesterday! ⏱️⚡

Guess what our Word of the Day was this afternoon? Scarcity. 😄 And yet, there was certainly no scarcity of talent, courage, culture, or good company!

Our “Speak English, Think Filipino” meeting was packed from beginning to end—with 3 formal speeches, a light and lively interlude, 4 wonderful guests, and 3 new members officially welcomed into the Noontime family! 🎉

And because we are, of course, law-abiding Noonies 😂, all of us came dressed in outfits that proudly aligned with the theme. From traditional Filipino-inspired wear to cultural touches and modern interpretations, we showed that you can speak English while thinking—and dressing—a little more Filipino. 🇵🇭✨

There may be scarcity in many things, but not in this room. Not in ideas. Not in stories. Not in laughter. And certainly not in the warmth of a growing community. ❤️

What an afternoon of speaking, thinking, learning, welcoming, and celebrating!

One question. No preparation. Just a few moments to think and the courage to take the floor.

At our August 14 meeting, Lyre Anni Murao, PhD, our newest member, rose to the challenge and earned the recognition of Best Table Topics Speaker. 🏆

What a wonderful achievement and a strong start to her Toastmasters journey!

That is one of the things we love about Table Topics. You may not know the question beforehand, but you learn to trust yourself, think on your feet, organize your thoughts, and speak with confidence, even when the unexpected comes your way.

Sometimes, all it takes is the courage to say yes to a challenge. And sometimes, that challenge reveals more potential in you than you realized.

Congratulations, Lyre! We are proud of this achievement and excited to see you continue to grow in your Toastmasters journey. 💙🎉

Can we speak English without losing the Filipino in us?

We use English to learn, work, share ideas, and connect with the world. But while the language we speak may change, the stories we tell, the values we carry, and the way we see the world can remain deeply Filipino.

That is the beauty of communication: we can speak a global language while still speaking from a distinctly Filipino perspective.

Talk about abundance!

Our Ah-Counter certainly had plenty to count that day, and judging by that smile, she was having a little too much fun doing it! 😄

In fact, we may have just witnessed one of the longest Ah-Counter reports in Davao Noontime Toastmasters Club history. 😂📋🎤 Talk about an abundance of ahs, ums, you knows, and other repeated words!

So, what exactly does an Ah-Counter do?

Throughout the meeting, the Ah-Counter listens for verbal fillers and repeated words—those little ahs, ums, you knows, and other expressions that can sneak into our speeches, especially when we are thinking on our feet.

At the end of the meeting, we receive a report that helps us become more aware of our speaking habits. Because sometimes, becoming a better speaker starts with noticing the little things we don't even realize we do.

And that is one of the things we love about Toastmasters: we learn, we challenge ourselves, we grow, and we have fun while doing it.

Think Toastmasters is all serious speeches, formal meetings, and intimidating people? Think again. 😉

Every meeting gives us opportunities to learn through different roles, activities, challenges, and plenty of laughter along the way.
