JOSE VICENTE FERRIOLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHAMPIONS EARTHQUAKE RESILIENCE THROUGH DEBRIEFING AND PLAY

Davao City, October 11, 2025 — In the aftermath of the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that jolted the Davao Region on October 10, Jose Vicente Ferriols Elementary School wasted no time in launching a holistic debriefing program for its learners and teaching staff, today, as classes resume to its regular schedule.

The initiative blended emotional first aid, interactive learning, and resilience-building activities to help the school community recover and prepare for future calamities.

The school transformed its open grounds and classrooms into zones of healing and empowerment. With support from the school principal, guidance counselor, class advisers and school's Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) team, the debriefing featured: psychosocial games and reactional activities facilitated by the class advisers.

Learners identified safe zones around the school and learned evacuation procedures, while teachers facilitated video lessons on Earthquake precautions: “Duck, Cover, and Hold,” identifying structural hazards, and preparing go-bags. Discussions on how challenges can make us stronger, using local stories of bayanihan were also emphasized.

School Principal Barbara Jane B. Bongato, emphasizes, " As educational leader, I commit to fostering a safe, supportive, and resilient learning environment. I, the teachers and the rest of the school personnel will regularly review and reinforce safety procedures, offer counseling services, and promote emotional well-being for both teachers and learners."

In times of disruption or recovery, the school ensures learning continuity through strategic planning, readiness of instructional materials, and the consistent delivery of quality education.

This is the school's shared responsibility—to protect, empower, and uplift every member of the school community.
