At just 10 years old, he had to stop schooling due to an unstable home brought about by frequent relocations, family conflicts, and the influences around him. For three years, he believed his dream of finishing school had already come to an end.
In 2015, he found a second chance through the Alternative Learning System (ALS).
With the guidance and encouragement of his ALS teacher, he completed both the Elementary and Secondary Levels, regained his confidence, and rediscovered his purpose.
Despite challenges and doubts from others, he chose to continue learning, eventually earning a degree in Criminology, passing the Criminologist Licensure Examination on his first attempt, and fulfilling his dream of becoming a member of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
His journey is a testament that ALS is more than an alternative path to education, it is a pathway to hope, transformation, and a brighter future for those who choose not to give up.

From ALS Completer to Teacher I: A Journey of Hope and Second Chances
Jared Eliezer A. Parac's dream of finishing school was interrupted by bullying.
As a Grade 8 student, he experienced rejection because he was different, eventually losing the courage to return to school.
After trying to start over in another school and facing the same experience, he became an out-of-school youth, uncertain if he would ever continue his education.
Everything changed when his mother encouraged him not to give up. Soon after, he found the Alternative Learning System (ALS) a place that gave him more than a second chance to study. It became a place where he felt accepted, supported, and encouraged to believe in himself again.
With the guidance of his dedicated ALS teachers and his determination to succeed, Jared passed the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Test with an outstanding rating. That milestone opened the door for him to pursue a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies.
Although college brought academic, financial, and personal challenges, he refused to let them stop him. In 2022, he graduated, passed the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers, and became a Licensed Professional Teacher.
Before joining the Department of Education as a Teacher I, Jared returned to ALS as a volunteer teacher, giving back to the very program that changed his life. Today, he continues to inspire learners by proving that no setback can define a person's future.
Jared's story is a powerful reminder that ALS is more than an alternative path to education, it is a place where hope is restored, confidence is rebuilt, and dreams are given the chance to grow.

Born into a poor family with ten siblings, Noel Banggat Sulotan grew up knowing how difficult life could be. His father was a farmer and blacksmith, while his mother stayed at home to care for the family. Despite their hardships, Noel loved going to school and dreamed of finishing his education. However, after completing elementary school, his father could no longer afford to send him to high school and instead asked him to work to help support the family.
At just 13 years old, Noel left home for Davao City to look for work. He took on different jobs from being an all-around helper in a carinderia to working in a grocery store and later in a clinic. Although life was challenging, he never gave up on his dream of studying.
In 2012, a friend encouraged him to enroll in the Alternative Learning System (ALS). Unsure of what ALS was at first, Noel took the opportunity and enrolled. Through the guidance of his ALS teacher and his own determination, he passed the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Test with an average of 89%. ALS became the bridge that allowed him to continue the education he thought he had lost.
His ALS journey opened the door to college, where he earned a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English. Although he faced several failed attempts in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), he refused to quit. Encouraged by a close friend and driven by perseverance, Noel continued preparing until he finally became a Licensed Professional Teacher.
Today, Noel proudly shares that ALS changed the course of his life. From once being a learner who was given a second chance, he now gives back by helping others discover the same opportunity through ALS.
His story reminds us that poverty, age, and life's challenges are never barriers to achieving our dreams.
With determination, the support of others, and the opportunity that ALS provides, success is always within reach.

A SECOND CHANCEπ»
Before earning one of the highest academic honors at UP Diliman, Colene Anne R. Santos first had to return to the education she was forced to leave behind.
Colene Anne, a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy graduate, was named among UP Dilimanβs candidates for summa cm laude for 2026.
Her story did not begin with a straight path through school. After a difficult childhood forced her to pause her formal education for several years, she found her way back through the Department of Educationβs Alternative Learning System, which gave her another chance to continue learning outside the traditional classroom.
She later passed the Philippine Educational Placement Test, allowing her to move forward in place of the traditional junior high school curriculum.
At UP Diliman, Colene Anne became active beyond the classroom. She served in UP Kabataang Pilosopo Tasyo and earned several recognitions in the Emmanuel Q. Fernando Philosophy Undergraduate Conference, including awards in Applied Ethics and the Ethics Bowl Team Competition.
Her story is a reminder that education does not always begin, continue, or end in the same way for everyone. For some learners, the road back is longer and more difficult, but it can still lead to places they once thought were beyond reach.
Pagbati, Colene Anne. Isang karangalan ang iyong tagumpay, hindi lamang para sa sarili mong pangarap, kundi para rin sa maraming kabataang patuloy na naghahanap ng daan pabalik sa edukasyon.
