DDC Students-Made Film “Baynte” Places Third in Salida Kadayawan 2026

Out of 10 short films produced by different filmmaking groups across the city, Baynte, a short film produced by Davao Doctors College (DDC) students, secured third place in Salida Kadayawan 2026.

Held as one of the most anticipated events of Kadayawan 2026, Salida Kadayawan highlights local filmmaking and storytelling as part of the city's annual celebration. The awarding ceremony took place on August 14, 2026, at Ayala Malls Abreeza, led by City Tourism Office Officer-in-Charge Willenito Tormis, alongside various deputy mayors, where Baynte was recognized for its compelling story and portrayal of Davao's diverse communities and everyday life.

Carrying the name J/K Productions, the film was head-directed by third-year Tourism Management student 𝗝𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘇 and head-written by fourth-year Doctor of Optometry student 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗺-𝗮𝗻, with Biology student 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗹 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 as the co-writer, alongside fellow DDC students, particularly from NEXUS Productions and The Clarion, who contributed their skills in filmmaking and storytelling.

The team's journey began when their synopsis was selected as one of the 10 finalists from 15 entries. From there, the team developed the concept and translated the story to screen while balancing their academic and organizational responsibilities. With only one day to complete the entire shoot and a few days for post-production editing, the team worked under tight deadlines, making the film a product of both creativity and time pressure.

Bringing the film to life, several The Clarion Editorial Board members took on key roles in the production. Julianne Lam-an served as co-director and head writer, 𝗔𝗻𝗷𝗲𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗼 and 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗹 portrayed characters in the film, while 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗼 served as head editor, shaping the final cut and bringing the team's story to the screen.

Baynte follows a story of a young girl who grew up in Bangkerohan Public Market, where her morning begins with a ₱20 pastil. The same bill passes through the hands of vendors from different cultures and livelihoods, carrying their stories of tradition, diversity, and everyday survival. Through its journey, Baynte portrays Bangkerohan as a community where differences are united by shared livelihood and connection.

Baynte’s win in Salida Kadayawan, one of the highlights of the Kadayawan Festival, is a testament to the creativity, collaboration, and storytelling skills not only of the DDC Vipers but also of Davao’s young filmmakers, proving that compelling local stories can resonate beyond the screen and with the wider community.

In accordance with 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗼. 𝟭𝟯𝟳𝟮, Davao Doctors College will observe 𝗞𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘄 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 and 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲’𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 on 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

Classes and office operations shall be suspended on the said date. Regular academic and administrative operations will resume on August 15, 2026, following the existing schedule.

This notice is issued for the widest dissemination and information of the Viper community.

𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐍 | A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Davao Occidental today, August 13, 2026, at around 5:22 PM, with tremors reportedly felt in parts of Davao City.

Authorities are currently monitoring the situation and assessing possible effects of the earthquake. The public is advised to remain alert and stay prepared for possible aftershocks.
