A single voice, a bare stage and a spine-chilling narrative evocative enough to make an entire room listen.

At the College of Education AVR, the University of Southeastern Philippines’ Buwan ng Wika celebration became a stage where Filipino language met art, imagination, and the growing presence of artificial intelligence under the theme “𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐈: 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐢𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚 𝐘𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧!” In a time where automation can generate a monologue. Shemaiah Keisha Gayog had to embody one through performance.

Claiming the stage, 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐚𝐡 got the audience at the edge of their seats in the 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞 segment, clinching the title of 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑-𝐔𝐏. Alone, she carried the full gravity of the chilling tale, turning the stage into Aling Ines’ world, the main character feared as an aswang, yet revealed to be something far more haunting, she was a woman confronting the consequences of her own creations.

From the disturbing opening cries of “Saklolo! Saklolo! Aswang! May aswang sa gubat!” to the eerie repetition of “Kain lang ng kain,” Gayog established a world where art, creation, and humanity slowly clashed. The character’s mastery of art “Si Aling Ines napakadalubhasa rin sa mundo ng sining” eventually took a grimmer turn as her own creations began to turn against their creator. She took the audience through a dramatic emotional roller coaster without a single co-actor.

Bravo for 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐚𝐡 𝐊𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐆𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐠, thank you for guarding the vital pulse of our shared expression.

𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧?

BALCS first-year student 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐘𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬 proudly represented the 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 in the 𝐃𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧 contest during the University of Southeastern Philippines’ Buwan ng Wika celebration, with the theme: "𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐈: 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐢𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚 𝐘𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧!".

Performing the piece that she wrote titled “𝐀𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐚 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠”, Dantes declamation showed about how AI is slowly replacing student creativity and talent in writing. Through her declamation, she showed how we often let technology control us, making us forget our own skills in writing. As her piece stated: “𝐃𝐚𝐡𝐢𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐨 𝐚𝐲 𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐰𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠, 𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢 𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐨 𝐚𝐲 𝐠𝐚𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐠𝐨, 𝐬𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐢 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐡𝐢𝐲𝐚 𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠”. She reminded everyone that AI is meant to help us, not to be abused or replace our own hands, creativity and voices in making an art. ‘nasaan na ang sining?'

Declamation allows students to express their feelings and emotions. It gives students a voice to raise awareness about real-world issues through writing and creating art.

Despite feeling nervous as a first year student joining a contest, Dantes still gave an amazing performance on stage. Her successful show was guided by her coach, Sir 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐚, with full support of her classmates and the 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 💚🦅Community. A warm shoutout also goes to 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐙𝐨𝐢𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬 for lending the Filipiana that she wore on stage! Her performance reminded us all that a true art needs both heart and mind. No one can replace the creativity and intelligence of a person. ‘ang tunay na sining ay nasa kamay ng tao.'

BALCS' batch 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐧 participated in the 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 (𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥) event of the University of Southeastern Philippines' Buwan ng Wika themed: "𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐈: 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐢𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚 𝐘𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧!"

The team was composed of BALCS students led by third-year 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐀𝐳𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐮𝐥 who played the character of Datu Barom-mai, together with the first-years 𝐈𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐬𝐨 as Hangin-bai, 𝐓𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 as Diwata sa Kakahoyan, 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐲 as the sound operator, with 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐣𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠 as their production team.

The team owed the success of bringing the characters to life through 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐮𝐩 and 𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 to the 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫-𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 who volunteered themselves to help the participants in achieving their looks.

The team was also grateful for the help they received from two more students who came from different programs. The two filled in the roles and gave justice to the characters, with 𝐍𝐞𝐳𝐞𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐞 as Madayaw Bayho, and 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐫𝐲𝐥 𝐙𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞 as Ermitanyo.

With a short amount of time to prepare and rehearse, even with last minute changes to the guidelines, the team still persevered. Taking the characters to heart and memorizing each line of the spoken and sung dialogues.

Together, the ensemble took on the stage and dominated their competition, performing the musical piece titled "𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝: 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧" adapting and reinterpreting the musical piece their alums have created and performed.

Their performance showcased the importance of family and the lengths a man would go to for his beloved. Datu Barom-mai's journey across the land just to find Madayaw Bayho reflected the theme regarding '𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬.' The team took on their roles with conviction and portrayed the characters passionately and with grace, producing 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 ever held on stage.

Congratulations to the team and all the other participants for showcasing the importance of the '𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬', not just in the College of Arts and Sciences— but for the entire university!

The 9-member dance troupe was composed of BALCS students with third-year 𝐑𝐡𝐨𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐥 as their leader and choreographer, alongside the first-years 𝐊𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐲 𝐉𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧, 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧, 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐀𝐥𝐤𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐨, 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐥 𝐋𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐲𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐧, 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐚, 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐣𝐚𝐧, 𝐌𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐯 𝐉𝐲𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐨, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐚 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐳𝐚.

The group performed their hearts out and dominated the competition with their choreography. The songs '𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐲' and '𝟏𝟑𝟏𝟗' from the band '𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐰' served not just as the music they danced to, but also as the inspiration for their 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

The choreography effectively reflected the controversies surrounding the country's current state. Calling themselves "𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐬", the dance troupe was able to embody the character of Kaloy— an ordinary citizen plagued with unending suffering from the poverty and injustice happening in the country— evoking the inner rage and despair of the hundreds who watched them perform.

Congratulations to the team for bringing home another 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 win, not just for BALCS— but for the entire College of Arts and Sciences!

BALCS' 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐚𝐭 participated in the 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐤𝐮𝐤𝐮𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨 segment of the University of Southeastern Philippines' Buwan ng Wika celebration themed: "𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐈: 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐢𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚 𝐘𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧!" Materializing the University's collective will to appreciate the Filipino language in all its forms and mediums, the College of Education invited their fellow students to show their own adoration for the national, cultural language through diverse competitions and presentations that elicited pride and marvel. Balicuat of BALCS-2 Dagitab took the stage of literature and arts through sharing a story that enveloped the audience with a world pouring with Filipino culture, and the local language that founded its essence.

Pagkukuwento was an opportunity for a creative star to showcase an imaginative nod to a language that has lasted history, societies, and national understanding. It's an art that stays alive to witness and tell the Filipino people's belonging, an essential to share with today's progressive present and the future nation-building to come.

This question came alive at the College of Education grounds during the University of Southeastern Philippines’ Buwan ng Wika celebration by exploring the intersection of language, technology, and human expression under the theme “𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐈: 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐢𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚 𝐘𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧!”, the university community gathered to honor the national language through extraordinary visual and performance arts. While modern artificial intelligence can write scripts instantly and mimic human vocals, the voices from 𝐁𝐀𝐋𝐂𝐒 reminded the audience that digital automation has its limits: It cannot reproduce the raw emotional vulnerability of a human being.

In the Short and Sweet Play Dialogue category, the team emerged as 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒, with 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐲 as Helen, 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐨 as Marco, and 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚 𝐀𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 as the sound operator. Brilliantly interpreting a script penned by the writing trio of Roanne Denise Nemeño, Kyle John Gomez, and Nathaniel Marvin Rosalejos, they pulled the audience into a story where Filipino language became a vessel for confronting fear, stigma, and misinformation. Their piece, craftily titled “𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆”, turned one word into two very different realities. What began with the joy of “Magiging tatay na ako!” shifted when Marco learned he had tested positive for HIV, exposing the fear and stigma fueled by misinformation.

In spite of being briefed of the competition only shortly before the event, the team rehearsed the entire piece in just one night and still prevailed. With only hours to brace, they relied on their grit, flexibility, and rapport with one another to bring the performance together. What began as a last-minute setback became a triumphant performance. Kudos to 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐨, 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐨𝐲, and 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚 𝐀𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧. May you continue to unravel the anatomy of vulnerability through your stellar craft.

The University of Southeastern Philippines’ Master of Arts in Literature (MALIT) program has earned Level III Re-accreditation from the 𝘈𝘤𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 (𝘈𝘈𝘊𝘊𝘜𝘗). The survey was conducted via Zoom from May 19-21, 2026. Seasoned accreditors identified key areas for improvement in instruction, research, faculty development, and library services, while praising the program’s strong foundation, reliable alumni, and dedicated efforts to preserve, sustain, and develop Mindanao’s literary and cultural landscapes.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 I 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐍 recently concluded its session for the Long Range Planning of Activities at the Room 404 of College of Computing (CIC) building led by the incoming President, 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐮𝐬 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐚𝐲 and HANDURAWAN adviser, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐘𝐮.

This event served as the first step towards realizing the vision of HANDURAWAN for the Academic Year 2026 - 2027. Where it strives for more collaboration and connection to the arts for literary and cultural students. The discussion offered great insights and opinions from all attendees of the executive board and committees—delivering a successful planning for upcoming events under the organization. The session started with the interest that these events are what students are looking forward to and ended with achieving the length of what is hoped for.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐥-𝐉𝐮𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢, a graduate of PhD in English Literature at Newcastle University, United Kingdom, and Assistant Professor at Lusail University, Doha, Qatar, was given a platform to speak about his recent literary scholarship to the faculty, students and alumni of the Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Cultural Studies (BALCS) and the Master of Arts in Literature (MALIT) of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) last August 13, 2026. Dr. Firas was heartwarmingly welcomed by Dr. Marnie Grace I. Sonico, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) through an inspiring speech to set the tone for what would be a deeply impactful discussion on 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈, specifically "Orwell, Empire, and the Rhetoric in Shooting an Elephant."

The stellar professor mainly detailed the role of contradictions in delivering narratives materialized by forceful power structures. Through Orwell's literature, an exemplary vow to bear the bare truth, Dr. Firas elaborated on the essay "Shooting the Elephant" to realize that agents serving the dominant, colonial ideology- though seemingly holding a sliver of power- still are victims and subjected to the same but veiled oppression. They end in clawing to fulfill the role molded for them in spite of themselves- their own values and beliefs. The professor also conversed about the weight of an author's milieu as he then likens the tragedy to our age of Artificial Intelligence, telling students faced with the reality of this hastily pervading technology that it only provides a false empowerment with the actual intent of controlling the masses by the mere erasure of individuality and independent thinking. In the discussion centered on dystopian literature, the two paradoxes reveal the other's complexity- a key importance of hypocritical writing that the professor emphasizes: complex systems need literary contradictions to explain them, and that human intelligence is marked by the ability to grasp two sides. AI is immensely distanced from this because it kills the imagination through the elimination of differences. Variety makes people think, and that is not what the empire wants, Dr. Firas concludes.

Post-discussion, a forum was held to turn to the listeners for their imparting of questions and insights. Ardor for answers stirred as talks of hypocritical AI usage and the inevitability of it met the response that it has always been about control that forces people to resort.
