Sometimes, people or situations change without warning—one moment things feel steady, and the next, everything shifts. This is described as 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬, meaning 𝐬𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐝, 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧.

This June, as we continue to honor Pride Month and the importance of self-awareness and care for both physical and emotional well-being, we explore another idiomatic expression that reflects how we experience everyday life.

There are days when we feel weak, low in energy, or simply not at our best. In those moments, we often say we are “𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫.” This idiom means 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.

Though it sounds like it refers to actual weather, the expression is believed to come from old sailing language, where rough seas and harsh weather would make sailors feel sick or exhausted. Today, it is commonly used to describe someone who is not feeling well.

In line with this, we revisit 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧, 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧 by 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧, published in 2010.

One cold night in Chicago, two teenagers with the same name—living completely different lives—cross paths in a way that changes everything.
