5. Self-awareness and Metacognition

✅ Meaning:

• Teach learners to think about their own learning:

◦ “How did I learn this?”

◦ “What did I find hard?”

◦ “What strategy works best for me?”

• Develop self-regulation, reflection, and learning habits.

✅ How to apply:

• Add reflection questions, self-assessment, or learning logs.

• Teach study skills and thinking strategies

In the new Department of Education three-term or “trimester” school calendar, the Opening Block is the short period at the start of each term before regular lessons fully begin.

It is mainly used for:

* student orientation
* class organization
* health and enrollment checks
* classroom preparation
* diagnostic or readiness assessments
* distribution of schedules/materials
* teacher preparation and planning

DepEd described it as a way to avoid interrupting actual teaching days later in the term. Instead of mixing orientations, meetings, and administrative activities with regular classes, these are grouped into the Opening Block.

Under the proposed structure:

* the school year is divided into 3 terms
* each term has:
1. Opening Block
2. Instructional Block (actual teaching)
3. End-of-Term Block (assessments, remediation, reports, trainings)

The Opening Block is usually only a few days to one week long.

Example:

* Week 1 = Opening Block
* Weeks 2–11 = regular classes/instruction
* Last days of term = exams, grading, remediation

The goal is to give teachers and students longer uninterrupted teaching periods and reduce disruptions during lessons.

In short ayaw na ng deped ang dating set up na first day pa lang lesson agad, dahil ngayon mas gusto nilang organized muna, oriented muna, emotionally ready muna and healthy muna and may baseline date entry muna. Ano kaya sa palagay niyo effective kaya ito sa ating mga mag-aaral at sa g**o? hmmm well see.. 🫶
