𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐇𝐒 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐩 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟒

Young campus journalists from public and private secondary schools across Davao City gathered at Crossing Bayabas National High School in Toril, Davao City, for a Campus Journalism Academy focused on strengthening their skills in writing, reporting, editing, visual storytelling, and multimedia journalism. The academy served as a training ground rather than a competition, giving participants opportunities to learn from mentors, practice their craft, and produce journalistic outputs, with outstanding works receiving recognition.

Representing Paradise Embac, Faith Joy Mique participated in English Editorial Writing, while Mary Grace Dalaguit took part in English Copyreading. Alyssa Grace Temonio and Rheanna Rosaut joined Mobile Journalism, with Mary Shayna Serenado in Layout Editing, Kiesha Kate Montecalvo in Photojournalism, Jeny Mae Dalaguit in English News Writing, Princess Jean Omasdang in English Sports Writing, Emierald Liboon in Filipino Editorial Cartooning, Shienlee Sardoma in Sci-Tech Writing, and Kim Arriva in Pagsulat sa Lathalain. Arriva earned a place among the Top 10 Best Outputs in Pagsulat sa Lathalain, highlighting her ability to develop a compelling feature story and apply the lessons gained from the training. Other participants also demonstrated their skills through their respective outputs, with several works earning recognition for creativity, accuracy, and effective storytelling.

“𝙈𝙮 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙢 𝙖𝙘𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙮 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙩𝙤𝙟𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙛𝙪𝙡. 𝙄 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙢𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙩𝙤𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨,” said Montecalvo.

Although she initially felt nervous as a first-time participant, Montecalvo said the experience allowed her to learn through practice and guidance.

More than the recognition, the academy gave the young journalists valuable hands-on experience and greater confidence in their chosen fields. Through workshops and practical activities, they strengthened essential journalism skills such as critical thinking, accuracy, creativity, and responsible storytelling while learning alongside fellow campus journalists from schools across Davao City.

For the Paradise Embac campus journalists, the experience was an opportunity to put their skills into practice, discover their strengths, and grow as young storytellers. Their participation and recognized outputs reflected their dedication to learning and their potential to contribute meaningful stories to their school and community.

​In a strong display of proactive leadership, the newly designated school head of Paradise Embac National High School, Ma'am Chonita F. Quijardo, alongside the school's Administrative Officer II, Ma'am Direca Ronquillo, officially hit the ground running by initiating a series of vital courtesy calls to key local leaders, healthcare providers, and security forces within the community.

Emphasizing a whole-of-community approach to education, Ma'am Quijardo's rounds are designed to build solid networks that safeguard student welfare, safety, and community development.

The string of introductory visits commenced at the local seat of governance, where she met with Barangay Kagawad Romeldo Barwado at the Barangay Hall to align administrative goals and secure local legislative backing for upcoming school programs.

Recognizing that student wellness is just as critical as academics, Ma'am Quijardo subsequently coordinated with the resident Barangay Midwife at the Barangay Health Center to establish robust health monitoring and medical support systems for the learners.

​Moving further into community safety and institutional security, the new school head held consultations with PMSG Jan Wilson Milvar of the RPSB PNP to map out collaborative public safety strategies around the school premises. Capping off her initial stakeholder engagements, she likewise reached out to the military sector, meeting with SGT. Arvin Amargo of the Philippine Army to foster open lines of communication and cooperative support for peace and development initiatives.

Through these concerted efforts, Ma'am Quijardo sets a cooperative tone for her tenure, ensuring that the school stands firmly united with local governance, health sectors, and uniformed personnel in nurturing a secure and thriving environment for every student.

Paradise Embac National High School marked a significant milestone on August 7, 2026, as it held its Leadership Turn-over Ceremony, formally welcoming Ma'am Chonita F. Quijardo as the incoming School Head while expressing heartfelt gratitude of Ma'am Mary Cris A. Hatagi, the outgoing School Principal, for her years of dedicated service.

The ceremony symbolized not only the formal transfer of leadership but also the continuity of the school's commitment to quality education, collaborative leadership, and the holistic development of every learner. It served as a reminder that leadership is a shared responsibility, one that inspires growth, strengthens partnerships, and ensures that the school's vision continues despite changes in administration.

In her message of appreciation, Ma'am Mary Cris A. Hatagi reflected on her four years and seven months of dedicated service with deep thankfulness and affection for the school community.

Her heartfelt words emphasized that the strength of Paradise Embac lies not only in its academic achievements but also in the unwavering dedication of its learners, teachers, parents, and stakeholders. By describing the school as her "second home," she highlighted the meaningful relationships and shared commitment that transformed challenges into opportunities for growth and success.

During the Formal Reading of Designation and Ceremonial Turn-over of the Emblem of Responsibility, Doc. Liberty L. Rasgo-Arellano, Cluster XIII Principal-in-Charged, underscored the true essence of educational leadership.

Her message reminded everyone that leadership requires courage, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new responsibilities. Moving beyond familiar surroundings is an essential step toward professional growth, enabling school leaders to become effective catalysts for positive transformation in their respective schools.
Accepting the responsibility with humility and optimism, Ma'am Chonita F. Quijardo delivered her inaugural acceptance speech, expressing her vision for collaborative leadership.

Her message reflected a leadership philosophy centered on listening, collaboration, and mutual trust. Rather than positioning herself as the sole decision-maker, she emphasized that meaningful progress is achieved when educators, parents, stakeholders, and the community unite with a common purpose, the success and well-being of every learner.

As PENHS turns a new page in its history, the Leadership Turn-over Ceremony became more than a formal tradition. It celebrated the enduring legacy of dedicated service, welcomed fresh perspectives and renewed commitment, and strengthened the school's shared mission of providing quality, inclusive, and learner-centered education. With gratitude for the past and hope for the future, the entire school community looks forward to another chapter of growth, excellence, and meaningful service under its new leadership.
